Hi There, Just looking for some advice really, I will cut a long story short, as ive posted before, My 7 year old, Height 115cm, weight 19kg gets ill at least once a month upto 5+ times a month, Headache, Abdominal Pain, vomitting, High blood sugar high ketones etc. can last anywhere upto around 6 hours, Well he had a hba1c few years ago, (due to something else) I think he was in the 4% somewhere, They recently did another one because of all of the sudden onset stuff, hes still within the normal, 5.9%. His results when he has these episodes have been 11.6, and ketones 1.6 8.9 ketones 1.6 but he will go back down to 5,6 etc. I have a rubbish ped who has discharged him, (not a diabetc ped) My guts telling me this is the worse thing, and i need to be under a ped, Because he wont listen to me i decided to take it upon myself, as Type 1 is in my family. I know it sounds really silly, but i brought a glucose meter, And thought i would go 2 days doing it, (hes absolutly fine with it). can you tell me if todays results are ok?

Breakfast at 7:40am, small portion at 11:30 his reading read 11.3
Then he had his lunch around 12pm, at 1:30pm i decided to recheck him his level was 7,5
2 Hours later, He hadnt eaten since lunch his level was 6,7
He had his dinner straight after so around half 3,
Now its 6pm, I have re checked and hes 8.2
I wont be checking him again tonight, I will definatly be checking before he has his breakfast. they seem like relativly ok levels apart from the 11.3?

I dont want to turn into a nurotic mother, But im at my witts end, He shouldnt have to suffer these brief episodes of being ill. :( but when your own child is becoming ill for the last 10 months and you dont know why, And you dont know where its gonna end, Its pretty scary. I feel like im going insane myself lol. can someone answer my questions please? :-) Thank you. xx

Hi. Many of the symptoms your son exhibits e.g. headache, vomiting, abdominal pain aren't normally those associated with diabetes. I wonder whether your son has another illness which is indirectly causing high blood sugar? The blood sugar levels you have measured are slightly high but not seriously so and not enough to cause ketones? I can understand your concern and obviously something isn't right but it may not be diabetes. If you can't trust your GP/PED perhaps s a visit to A&E next time he vomits or has abdominal pain may be necessary.

Try testing first thiing in morning before anything to eat. Then before everyevery meal and 2 hours after with no snacking in between. And last thing before bed .That should give a better overall picture and somthing to show any doctor. Not sure about youngsters but 2 hours after eating is recommended for adults

Thank you for your reply, Hes been asleep since 6pm, Hes in lazy mode lol, So thought id check him at 9:10pm, Which is 3 hours or so, Hes 8.8. Im assuming thats ok? I shouldnt be testing him, but if my ped wont help, Hes my baby ive got to try and figure it out myself :( But after tommorrow when all results looked at in a better picture like you say, Then i will no longer do it :). He hasnt had a reading under 7.5 today at all, I thought under 7.5 was normal? xx

though between 4 to 6 for non diabetic but not sure about childern will look up. Here is what I have found
This site may give better prospective than the pasted statment in the middle only put it there fore you to see what you may be up against. If he was my child I would be insisting on a proper testing or change dr
Ope this helps

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/type-1 ... iagnosisIm new to all this but I

ChildrenFor children up to 6 years old, target blood sugar level before eating should be between 5.5 mmol/l (100 mg/dl) and 10 mmol/l (180 mg/dl). Before going to be values should be between 6.1 mmol/l (110 mg/dl) to 11.1 mmol/l (200 mg/dl). From ages 6 to 12, before eating, glucose level should be between 5 mmol/l (90 mg/dl) and 10 mmol/l (180 mg/dl), and between 5.5 mmol/l (100 mg/dl) and 10 mmol/l (180 mg/dl) before going to bed. Childred aged 13 to 19 should expect similar readings than adults. Not sure I agree with this

I was tested a few years bk for diabetes insipidus. That's nothing to do with blood sugars so I was tested on hospital. Basically they monitor the level of fluid going into your body and coming out.

I was admitted to hospital in April with headaches, abdominal pain and vomiting. I'm type 1 and after 8 ntes in hospital and wot felt lyk millions of tests and scans I was diagnosed with another illness. I only went to the hospital too as I thought the symptoms were linked to my high bs and I wanted it sorted. My point, after rambling sorry, is plz get a 2nd opinion x
