I need help I'm type 2 and although my blood sugars have been well controlled for a while at around 6.2 latest. If been going to the gym I have lost 6 stone in the last 5 years but am struggling to lose any more. I on what I hope is a balanced diet. No processed food plenty protein a few carbs and plenty veg. Does anyone have any ideas what might be preventing me from losing more. If been stuck at 19 stone now for 2 months even though iv been going to the gym 5 days a week, and I walk about 5 miles a day at work. Cheers

Almost the impossible question but it can take a while to drop off after the initial loss. You obviously need to lose a fair bit more (but a good start) so I'd question your portion sizes as the exercise seems adequate. What do you classify as a few carbs?

Depends what veg you are eating because some are high in carbs, esp the
ones grown underground : i.e carrots & Parsnips.:)

Yes maybe think about portion size. I am finding that I too am stuck having experienced initial pleasing weight loss. However I am aware that I eat to the clock rather than when I'm hungry just because it is habit. I am going to experiment with intermittent fasting over the next few weeks and see whether I can kick start further weight loss. Look up the work of Dr Jason Fung if you are interested.

Well done on the fabulous loss so far.

It might be helpful if you gave us an indication of what you ate today, and maybe yesterday (or any other couple of typical days). I know when I started trimming back my carbs, I was quite surprised how many carbs I could clock up in the things I was still eating, coupled with quantity.

There are a few things you could try to restart your losses, but best to ascertain there aren't any really easy trims from what you are eating or drinking now.

Wow 6 stones is amazing!! Well done.

I agree with everyone's advice. Do you have a bg monitor? I'd use it to evaluate impact of food so you can make sure your diet isn't impacting on higher bg.

Keep going! I'm so impressed!!! X

On a normal day I have breakfast of either 2poached eggs and wholemeal toasting I'm at home at work a bowl of porridge. A banana and a pear mid morning lunch bowl of skimmers or homemade vegetable soup and a turkey sandwich. Dinner grilled chicken and rice and veg or turkey mince Sheppard pie and veg a bowl of shredded wheat about 8pm then nothing tillnthe morning. I also have hypothyroidism as well which does complicate things.

Today so far iv had a probiotic drink. The ones in then tiny bottles. banana and a pear, at 7am. A packet of Quakers at 9 and have just had chicken noodlemsoup and a corned beef and mustard sandwich and that's me until rpm dinner time. My daughter's making turkey meatballs with pasta but I don't have huge portions. Gym this afternoon at 2pm for a hour. Nothing tonight except maybe a yoghurt

If had conflicting advice from doctors one says reduce carbs to a bare minimum the other says eating more carbs help your body to balance the blood sugars better but I could probably do with cutting out potato altogether.

I would agree with the doctor that says you need to reduce carbs to a bare minimum (the actual amount will vary from person to person)

It's difficult. I did reduce to almost zero but found in had little or no energy when out non my bike or at the gym.

Heggars, do you test at home, around your eating?

When I was first diagnosed that was one of the first things I started so that I had immediate feedback on my condition. For me, that testing showed that my body didn't deal with some carbs too well. For me, those were pasta, potatoes, bread and of course the sugary things. Curiously, I have always been able to eat oats, where lots of others just can't.

In your shoes, I would consider ditching all the big carbs - by that I mean fruit (bananas are sugar bombs), bread and pasta, - no matter what colour they are! Doing that would probably leave you hungry, so increase protein a bit and leafy (not root) vegetables a lot. I would be surprised if your bloods didn't come down a bit, and you would be likely to lose weight.

To be clear, you could have a few days or a week where your weight actually goes up following my suggestion, as you would be consuming bulky veg, which can weigh heavy on the scales. I know if I eat normally for me, I know what my weight would be. If I gorge on veg, next morning my weight will be up, then sort itself out over a couple of days.

And drink plenty of water.

As you can tell, I would tend to go along with your doc who isn't a carb fan. In my experience, I can eat skip loads of food and maintain my weight (I'm very slight) when not eating carbs. Carbs are the naughties to us all, although moreso for diabetics.

I'm afraid I don't test as often as I should. I work 3 different shifts per month so like all things that should be done regularly its becomes a chore..but yes I eat too the carbs you have mentioned on a regular basis. But will now give them a miss cheers for all your great advice.

First of all, well done on your amazing success so far!
it's great that you're very active and are doing so much exercise, as it improves health and lifespan; it does not, however, play a major part in weight loss.
I would also recommend lowering carbs, but increasing healthy fats (avocado, salmon, olives) at the same time, so as to avoid starvation and have long-term energy for exercise.
Another recommendation I fully agree with is that you look at Dr Jason Fung, his blog and series of YouTube videos about weight loss and T2D. Following his advice helped me break my stall and continue to shed fat.
Good luck!

It's difficult. I did reduce to almost zero but found in had little or no energy when out non my bike or at the gym.

If you find yourself lacking energy, up the protein, veg and a bit of fat too. Fat doesn't make us fat. Carbs make us fat. There's much scientific evidence to support that these days.

Wow some great advice there thanks. I'm gonna give all the advice a go starting this afternoon after my visit to the gym. Cheers.
