Hello

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 16 years ago. Over the years my HbA1c has been slowly rising from 48 to the highest of 83 last year. I followed the advice given by the DN to eat carbs at every meal... I now realise that this was so wrong.

I’m a vegetarian, need to lose weight and bring blood glucose down. I’ve no idea where to start. Is it possible for someone who doesn’t eat fish, meat or eggs to go low carb and lose weight?

I suspect that it could be difficult to go really low carb, but chosing things with a lower carb content, avoiding grains, starchy vegetables and substituting lower carb options you should be able to lower your intake - cauliflower is a good choice rather than - for instance potatoes.
It is really wicked that diabetics are being given such poor advice on how to take care of themselves.

Hello, I will tag @Avocado Sevenfold who is also a vegetarian and she may be able to help you more than me. I know she's got some great recipes and her food sounds wonderful.

Hi Rose - I was recently diagnosed with type 2 in October with news of HbA1c of 100. I was Vegetarian but to address my blood sugars I have had to relax things somewhat and have introduced Fish to my diet. I already consumed eggs.
I have found trying to go LC difficult but have managed to get my HbA1c to 37 in three months simply by removing all the natural sugars I could but completely removing bread, pasta, alcohol, rice, cereals and root vegetables. I thought that I was following a healthy diet until I realised that Low Fat was not as important as Low Sugar and those five-a-day recommendations from NHS have proved unhelpful.

I don't eat anymore cereals, bread, rice and potatoes, I've never been keen on pasta, pizza or takeaways either.
I made a creamy cauliflower and vegetable bake last week but the recipe had cream and cheese in it... I was shocked at how much fat was in the recipe, it was very filling I could only eat a small portion.
I'm not sure how much carbs or fats I should be eating in a day?

Congratulations on reducing your HbA1c so dramatically in such a short space of time! Very well done! :)

Would you mind sharing some of your meal ideas ... your results are very inspiring.

Hello Rose.

If you have a look around the forums, you'll find there's a thread called something like, "Vegetarians: What have you eaten today?" , that will show you what the vegetarians on this site are eating. No all are eating a lower carb diet, but many, many do. We also have several vegan members, including @Avocado Sevenfold . Avo is a wonderfully inventive food, and although not veggie, I have tried several of her magic concoctions.

Good luck with it all. You'll be fine. :)

Hello AndBreathe

Thank you just found the vegetarians corner. :)

How do you include someones name in a post so it comes up orange?

Tag them by writing like this @Rose88 As you type, you'll see a list of names appear and can choose the right one. Please note - there should be no space after the "@". The name will turn red automatically when it's posted if you do it right :)

Ah,............. That well kept secret. You just type @ and the the person's forum name. Just like@ @Rose88

As you type some options may show for you. You can then click on the correct option, or just finish typing the name, then ensure you have a space between the name and the remainder of your message.

I hope that helps.

Hi Rose,
I will come back with more information when I have some more time - maybe at the weekend but my approach here having been diagnosed with Type 2 is to attack the condition full on and here are the changes I have made since October which has moved my HA1bC to below range threshold and weight loss so far 30Kg
I have increased my exercise to at least 3miles power walk with my dogs early each morning before work - seven days a week and aiming to hit 10000 steps on Sat/Sun when I have more time
Diet has been to treat Carbs as toxins and to stay below 40g per day wherever possible but increasing my protein with oily and white fish (sustainable species) and also being less scared of fats (cheese etc)
Regular daily monitoring using my Christmas present of a Fitbit watch that tells me where I am in terms of my targets
I would also advocate reading "The Real Meal Revolution" by Noakes, Proudfoot & Creed with the open mindset to be willing to have your mind changed about how society had moulded us all to eat an unhealthy diet yet think it was healthy!

Lastly for now - be driven and don't let boredom and any kill-joy friends and family distract you from your goals!

Also, thank you from this newbie member of this forum for your congratulatory response!
