Hello

My Dad has been Type 2 for about 20 years, he's now 72. He became insulin dependant about 10 years ago and over the last 18 months has had numerous hypos (down to 1.6). We've had the ambulance numerous times even though we check he has all his medication and monitor his diet closely. We've asked numerous times for them to get to the bottom of the hypos to no avail.
He went in hospital for a new knee in Oct , which was fine, but then he went into a diabetic coma. fortunately the gent opposite sensed something was wrong and they struggled but they got him back. They have now taken him off the insulin and are just using sitagliptin and metformin to keep a balance. His BG tonight is 26 !!!!!!!!! and has been creeping up gradually over the last few days. He wont let us take him to A&E and off past experience NHS direct were useless. He has been eating Nuts that he recieved for his birthday on Sunday...could they be affecting him??? Also he has a bit of a cold.

You ask the doctors to sort it and nothing happens.....we've learned also this last few weeks off a very good community matron that he has Cardio Myopethy, Chronic Kidney Disease and impaired liver function...thats on top of the cerebral and cerebell atrophy.......HELP !!!!!!!!!

get a doctor or ambulance bg that high isn't good don't bother with nhs 24 just get him seen asap

he won't let us and he is a lot bigger !! we've phoned them before to no avail. he seems fine...pulse ok colour as usual. unfortunately he is of a very stubborn nature and will not go to hospital unless its in a body bag he says . i just can't understand why after 10 years they've stopped the insulin completely. but thanks .....

Yeah after he he went into the diabetic coma they decided to stop the insulin. Initally is BG was between 10 and 15 but has recently started to spike. They'd messed around with the Sitagliptin for months before and have now said that is instead of the insulin. He was hypo numerous times in the last 18 months, a lot of the time was stress or UTI's but we got know help from the doctors. We thought that after the coma episode in hospital they may have taken it more serious but it doesn't look that way. They also have him on Warfrin and Aspirin at the same time (had DVT 10 years ago that travelled to heart) and no one can give us an answer why and some think it not a good idea....its all so frustrating and for my dad because he's seen how upset mum and me are has now suggested we travel to Switzerland and have him PTS..his words not ours...so as you can tell the whole thing is a mess !

the concoction of medicines is

aspirin
bendroflumethiazide
bisoprpol
ciprofibrate
folic acid
Metformin
Perindopril
Sitagliptin
Thiamine
Warfrin

Is anyone sure they all work hand in hand ? Used to be on Lantus! plus Doxasozin and Pyroxidine till this last week as well

In view of all the medications listed and all the problems you have stated in my view the best course is to get an 'Expert' to review all the medication and treatment, an Endocrinologist.

How you get that done is, I am sorry to say, down to him.

thanks....we're trying to get him moved in terms of which diabetic clinic he attends as the current one don't even bother to return calls....i think that as he is 72 and has underlying health conditions they don't care. I'm going down to his surgery in the morning to complain and i've also written to the local PCT to highlight the lack of care that they are providing. The surgery fails to even send his repeat prescriptions to the pharmacy even with ten days notice and then the pharmacy rushes as he is tabletless for a day and misses the metphormin and gives him pyroxidine which he no longer should have....it is just a sad state of affairs ! he's due and MRI this next month too and he is so fed up. until this last 18 months he was a little immobile, sometimes forgetful due to cerebral damage but he is now more like a 90 year old than 72 and it affects more than just him...thanks for the reply and advice..i'll dig my heels in even more x

Hi Ellyg.

After hearing that I am even more convinced he needs to see an Endocrinologist. He appears to be getting some scandalous treatment and it is quite right that you should complain bitterly about his lack of care !

Please let us know how you get on.

will do...thanks x...just took his BG and down to 16.9....banned nuts from him till further notice. he's a bit tearful as mum is so stressed and down she says things that make it sound like its his fault but she doesn't mean it that way she is just very worried...they've been married 45 yrs and have always been like chalk and cheese !!!!!!!....but they have lasted x

shame they sound just like my nana & granda the original odd couple. good luck to you's all I hope he gets the help he deserves
