Advice on Newcastle Diet for smaller women

Just ordered some ketone testing strips which should arrive on Tuesday so I'll report back then. Anyone want to take bets whether I'm in ketosis or not?

Fbg 7.3
and was 6.9 2 hrs after dinner last night. Weight loss is slowing again but I'm under the 9st mark now-8:13.5 this morning. Maybe my body will do everything in different stages. A stage of weight loss then one of better bgls then more weight loss etc.

Thanks Kevin. Tbh I'm totally fine and not finding it that difficult so I think I'll manage the next 5 weeks easily. In fact if the weight loss/bgl reduction continues to be so rubbish I may go on a 600cal diet for maybe a month from mid September to see if it is the levels of calories are the problem or its just simply my horrendous genes.

I still think you might want to look at the sugar in the shakes. Those are pure liquid sugar. I would never achieve good bs with 20 c liquid sugar. It might not be new castle but reducing that sugar and replacing it with something nourishing like veggies and a small portion of protein might behoove you. I know you're set on new castle but it might be something to consider.

You may be right but I guess I'm on this track now and I'm in a rhythm so changing mid 8 weeks when I'm pretty relaxed about all of this just feels to stressy for me. When I go back to Lchf I of course will not eat/drink half as much carbs per meal. So maybe a combo of the weight loss on this diet and then Lchf will see results. 80% of those on ND achieve diabetic 'remission'. I may be part of the 20% for whom it doesn't work

I think I remember you were eating grains and dairy before this venture right? And how many carbs do you think you were eating before? I apologize if I already asked this but is a very long thread to go back through it all

Not a lot of either. Maybe a sprinkling of cheese on stuff, some cream in a sauce, one slice of low carb bread per meal (4g of carbs )They def don't spike my bgls (remember we are all different ). I was eating between 10-20 gms carbs a day. So less than now but I was 10lbs heavier then and my bgls were around about 1mmol worse. I think with me it's just going to be slow coz I think my genes are a bit rubbish

In the Michael Moseley book there's a story about a woman having to get down to a BMI of 19 before she saw 'remission'. Maybe that's what'll I'll need to do

That'd be another 13kg to lose which sounds better than 2 stone 2 lbs or 30lbs

Many people, diabetic or not lose lots of weight just by eliminating grains and dairy, low carb or not. Those are the two food groups that lack on the pounds for me. Perhaps inadvertently by eliminating them is why you are dropping weight. And perhaps the sugar in the shakes is why you are not doing as well with BS. Just something to think about. When and if you switch it up try staying off the grains and dairy and see if you co time to lose weight.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, please don't misunderstand me. I look at your posts and I see glaring things that would effect me but YMMV

It's a possibility but my bgls were down by about 2mmol on the Lchf diet and I was losing weight. I lost 10lbs in 2 months (put 5 lbs back on in Portugal on holiday but bgls only went up by 1mmol about). So I'm lighter now than on Lchf and took 10lbs off in extra quick time. At the moment I just want to see what happens over the remaining 5 weeks then go back to my normal Lchf diet after. I'll only take more drastic action if I need to eg no grains/ dairy or a 600 cal diet. And of course it's all dependent on my next hba1c test which may mess this all up by putting me on some horrible medication which may mean I'm not in a great place to do anything more drastic

Hi @Naomi425
I found I started getting control of my blood levels when I got my BMI down to 19.6 from 25 at diagnosis. My GP thought my weight was then too low and I have increased it slightly but still keeping (hopefully) my levels under control. I wanted to do the Newcastle diet but my GP was not supportive for that so I used my meter and cut out all the foods that spiked me. I kept a record of everything I ate (weighed all my food) at that time and tried to keep to 500 calories less than my fitbit said I was burning each day. This took me several months. Now I am able to eat some carbs that had spiked me in the past but I still keep testing as I want to keep control.

Interesting

My children gave me a fitbit about a month after I was diagnosed. It has got me walking lots and I do like the competition with my children. I used it for all my food for several months but don't use it for food now, I just do an occasional day to check I haven't upped my quantities too much.

I take my iPhone most places including when I run - not everywhere and that records steps, distance etc. I use the iPhone health app for that and put my weight in the app . I'm doing 'couch to 5k ' at the moment which is a running programme which I never thought I'd manage but I've nearly finished now. I'm already booked in for a 5k run in September. I use my fitness pal to record all my food so I know what spikes me I think. But I think I may be similar to you in that I need to be skinny to beat this thing and that may take some time. Hey ho
