Advice on sugar levels

I think I'd probably agree with @Osidge...

Although LCHF has done and is still doing wonders for me, I'm getting older and things are becoming a bit worn out, so I'm willing to accept a "helping hand"! :p So while I don't necessarily believe I need to be on metformin permanently it may be advantageous for me to keep on with it. However if I can get my HbA1c down a little lower, I'll definitely ask if I can go down from my current 2x500mg metformin SR a day to just one. I've been taken off some of my other non-diabetic meds recently because I no longer need them, so my GP obviously doesn't consider me to be a cash cow. :D

I've also come off Metformin thanks to LCHF. I was on three a day. My last HbA1c was at 5, so my GP agreed I could stop the pills for three months to see what happens. I'm due another test in June and am very confident my levels won't have increased, so am sure my GP will agree with me staying off the meds.

Having said that, I did find it a bit more challenging at first as my finger-prick tests were showing an increase. I lowered my carbs and got it back under control again.

Hope you find your way, too.

I stopped taking Metformin as it was causing too many hypos so it was becoming a bit of a pain. It is a personal choice really, some dont mind taking it and others prefer to be off it. Dont be bullied by your Dr you do have options. I book myself in for a blood test every 3 months just to keep a check on my Hb levels.

@4ratbags So sorry you had that reaction from Metformin. I think you have been unlucky as metformin does not stimulate the production of insulin. Too much insulin and not enough carb is the cause of a hypo. I can take Metformin and not actually eat a thing and I never go hypo. Guess I am lucky.

@Osidge thats what makes diabetes so interesting, we are all different and our bodies react differently to foods and medication. I still have the odd hypo but Im pretty in tune with it all now but boy what a long journey.

You are so right @4ratbags. It would be so much easier if our bodies all behaved the same. Still, we continue on and tread the path that works best for each of us. And of course, we have the combined experience of this forum to help us.

Take care

Doug

Many thanks for all your replies. I am trying to reduce the carbs which is how I have reduced my HbA1c to 47 this forum has given me so much help and advice. my daily carb intake is between 100-150g the carbs seem hidden everywhere so I'm still finding my feet. I have just ordered more blood test strips and lancets to aid my monitoring. From what I can gather on this forum some Dr prescribe them and some don't, mine being the latter. I do have 25g morn-flake porridge made with water for breakfast this has 17g of carbs then a daily salad with either fish, chicken or meat and vegetables for the remaining meal. If I am going wrong please feel free to give me some guidance.

I have other medical problems one of which is no gall bladder a side effect is I produce too many bile salts which turn to sugar so that does not help, my Dr won't recognise this. I do take medicine for this.
I have also had breast cancer and take medication for that so if I can come off either gliclazide and or metformin it would be great.

Once again many thanks.

Wishing you luck. There is no reason why you have to wait a year. I get mine every 6 months!!
I get mine 6 monthly or so too.
