I have been getting tattoed for many years before I was diagnosed T1 and still have some work to be done before I'm finished. Any advice on whether I should stop or precautions I should take if I continue?
With all tattoos the hygiene standards of the shop should be asked about. Any reuse equipment that pierces the skin should be sterilised before reuse to stop the possible transmission of blood borne viruses. Diabetes if a bit out of control can predispose to skin infection so the better control you can achieve at around the time the better. (Boils tend to be common in diabetes.) If your blood sugars are reasonable you should be no more at risk than the normal population.
I've had many tattoos and had no problems just make sure your sugar levels are good before you go and make sure you have some lucozade or something with you just incase...you should be fine though! You may need to take a note from your doctor with you now though as most places will ask if your doctor thinks you're well enough to go through the process or you can not tell them but that's your decision cos if something goes wrong you may not be able to claim if you haven't declared! x
