Hi,

I have just signed up for a gym and wondered if anyone could give me some advice about how my diabetes will effect my ability to work out, and what if anything i should look out for.

Thanks

Hi. I've been a gym member both before I was diagnosed 7 years ago and since then. Assuming your BS isn't wildly out of control I think the only thing to think about is the possibility of a hypo after the gym session if you are on something like Gliclazide, insulin etc which can increase insulin production or BS burn-up. Having a BS meter to test before and after a few times is worth doing, although I've personally never had a problem but we are all different.

Thanks daibell

The only meds I'm on is metformin morning and evening, although I'm not overweight I not at all fit so as my partner wants to loose weight I thought I should join him at the gym. Can't say I'm looking forward to it tho

Hi

I regularly go to the gym and lift heavy weights 4-5 days a week. With the weight loss comes the incentive to be more careful with what I am eating. I am on Lantus and so far I have had no problems with my BS levels either before or after my workouts. The only changes that I have made is an increase in my healthy carbs before workouts for energy (that usually means a piece of granary toast and marmite for breakfast on gym days so nothing too major.)

I will always take my BS monitor with me to the gym but I haven't needed it yet.

The gym is a fantastic tool to use in the management of diabetes and I can strongly recommend it based on my own experiences. Good luck!

Im at the gym 5 days a week, and I have no problems with my BS levels, but I do test before and after a workout. I'm on no medication.
I have been an active athlete all my life, only amature nothing serious. But Ive always trained and kept fit. about 5 years ago I stopped training, put on 4 stone, and finally last year I was diagnosed with type 2. I always wonder if I hadn't have stopped training would I now be type 2? Out of all the **** I have read about this condition, for me, a normal healthy low carb diet, and lots of excercise ( if your able) is the best advice I would give to any t2. Keep it simple is my motto

I go to the gym three times a week. I'm recently diagnosed type 2 and trying to control by diet and weight loss. I have been going for years but have become much more organised and consistent since diagnosis. I haven't noticed any ill effects whatsoever and I'm now fitter and lighter than I've been in years, although I'm still overweight. Go for it.

Hi

Thanks everyone, I've been going for the last week but so far all I've done is use the swimming pool and i don't have my induction until next Wednesday.
They also have at the gym a sauna and steam room do any of yo know if using these is likely to effect my levels.
