Hi, I've newly been diagnosed with cancer, and then type 2 diabetes.
The big disease seems to be responding well to treatment so now I'm trying to discover the ins and outs of Type 2. I've lost a fair bit of weight so don't really need to keep my weight this low, 11 stone 6 pounds, can I be just a bit over the carb guidelines?

Hi and welcome!

How many carbs are you aiming for?

The best guide to how many carbs you can deal with is to test with a glucometer before and after eating, there is no set rule.

If it’s maintaining or putting on weight you’re after, the general principle would usually be to up your fat intake rather than carbs. If that is the case, this article should help: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/gain-weight

And Diet Doctor is a great website in general for low carb eating.

I guess, that the cancer aspect may present a different level, as in getting the best nutrients, vitamins, even dare I say it sugars to give You the energy needed to repel your invader.

I do see the LCHF keto etc as being inherently healthier, and see no reason why it shouldn't merit a decent looking at to improve overall health.

I would just remind that You will be battling what maybe potentially competing illnesses, so I'd definitely be seeking lots of advice regarding how what ever diet You decide upon could impact in the cancer side of things.

I've listened to many in here, @Goonergal amongst many have given me good, honest and from the heart advice

From the T2D perspective I doubt you could have found yourself in s better site

Shane we all have to meet such wonderful people under such circumstances.

Best wishes
Hope you find a journey that matches all your needs

Hi Alan and welcome,

I was also diagnosed with both cancer and diabetes in late 2011 so I understand what a double blow that is.

you don’t say what type of cancer you have or what treatment (and I appreciate you may want to keep that confidential). If you are having chemo and/or steroids that is likely to increase your blood sugars and make the diabetes harder to manage in the short term. It may also affect your sense of taste and what you want to eat.

but putting that aside I would recommend moving towards a low carb diet to see how that works for you. Definitely make sure you get a variety of vitamins in your diet, and also enough iron if you have any problems with anaemia.

do you have a blood glucose meter?
