Diagnosed t2 12 weeks ago. Not on any medication. Have radically changed my diet and increased my exercise (running twice a week as well as plenty walking) resulting in a very happy 2 stone weight loss. Just got myself a meter. Received strips today so only managed to test before and after tea tonight.

What I have eaten today - cheese omelette for breakfast, sliced pork and handful of cherry tomatoes for lunch. Tested before tea 7.4 then had baked chicken breast, cabbage and ratatouille (sp), greek yoghurt and berries. 2 hours after 8.8.

I had my bloods taken last Friday (nurse very pleased with my weight loss) going back this Friday for review. I know I should just wait until I get the results on Friday but was just thinking do these figures seem too high. The last 3 months I have been so strict no bread, potato or any sweet stuff.

Sorry for the stupid question but because I got a reading of 8.8 does this mean that I have eaten something I shouldn't have had.

What is an acceptable rise 2 hours after?

Getting a bit worried about review now. I was told about the "eat well plate" but have decided against it and following low carb.

Hoping to stay medication free.

Hi
Wait for your result before jumping to conclusions. Could your dinner portion size have been too large? Food sounds ok so perhaps just a bit too much of it? I've lost similar amount of weight in last 12 weeks and similarly cut back dramatically on carbs and my result went from 79 to 41. I know we're all different and I was like you - impatient to hear the result. My DN was on the phone a lot quicker this time to pass on the good news! Hopefully yours will be too.

Ps also increased exercise like you - swimming for me.

It takes time and depends on what your readings were at the time of diagnosis too. After 3 months I got my HBA1c down from 86 to 48 and it took a few more months to get it into the 30s. Just carry on with what you are doing and be patient.

You could alter your exercise regime to do something every day. Daily exercise, even if it is less exercise, is better than more vigorous exercise a couple of times per week. Hormones are released which trigger the production of lipid reducing enzymes, but they only last for 24 hours or so, 36 hours max. Daily exercise keeps them nicely topped up.

Just work up some sort of routine for eating and doing some sort of activity, a rutine that you feel happy with and one that you can slot into, as if in your sleep. Then, be patient. You have the rest of your life to get used to the new regime. It's not a sprint. Good luck !

Hi,

I'm not very experienced in this yet, but it seems to me your after tea reading in only a bit high (not much) because your before tea reading was high. The actual rise was only 1.4 which is very good. You need to keep testing to see if this high before meal reading is abnormal or normal, and then you can make some plans. I can't see anything wrong with what you have eaten today. You should be aiming for 4 to 6 before meals and under 7.8 2 hours after, but you will get higher readings than that and the trick is to learn from high readings and not to stress about them. Easier said than done as I stressed big time today with a totally unexpected reading of 12.1 after lunch, but I have learnt now not to repeat that meal!

Well done on ignoring the eat well plate and keep up the sort of meals you had today. Nothing at all wrong with any of it.

Yes, well done! You're definitely going in the right direction.

I think you are doing really well but it's good to always be on the lookout for foods that cause an unexpected rise. Maybe the cherry tomatoes at lunchtime? Maybe there was sugar in the ratatouille, if it was from a shop?

Thanks for the replies. Getting used to testing, testing and testing now. Tested last night following 6.5km run 5.1 had a small slice of rye bread and 1 spoon of baked beans, yoghurt and berries. 2 hours later 10.1 :( guess beans are out now. This morning was 5.8 ????.

Seeing DN in morning fingers crossed there's an improvement in bloods.

Your exercise may also be causing your liver to dump glucose into your blood in an attempt to supply your muscles with energy. This usually happens with strenuous exercise.

Had you exercised before eating? If so the 7.4 may have been due to that, rather than your lunch.

No exercise before (can I count a 10 min walk home from work lol) Only running Wed and Fri. Its as much as my poor legs, hips and back can manage at the moment. Do walk every day tho.
