Akins Diet = No Insulin ? Type 1

I am getting married soon and have not been long diagnosed type 1 and have put on a few pounds. I want to do the Akins diet but I'm a bit concerned. If I am not eating any carbs does this mean my long acting insulin will be all I need? Can anyone give me advice on their Akins experience. Thanks

As a type 1 you will need insulin at all meals, albiet most like.y smaller doses. I eat 20 carbs or less a day but still need basal/ bolus but in small doses. Your meter will tell you.

What is your insulin regimen now? Are you on both basal and bolus? How many units. Is your diet higher carb now?

@Lacey_The_Sailor If you're only trying to lose a few pounds you might find it easier to just reduce your carbs a little rather than go on Atkins. It's generally easier to calculate your bolus and control your blood sugar if you have some carbs with your meal, especially if you're recently diagnosed and still getting used to things. If you have no carbs, you may have to consider protein in your bolus calculations.

How many carbs a day do you have currently?

I'm on Lantus and NovoRapid now. I take 14 in the morning and evening for the Lantus and then depending on what I eat for my meals I count the carbs to know what to take for my NovoRapid.

It just doesn't feel right that if I don't eat any carbs that I don't have to inject NovoRapid.

I eat sparingly throughout the day with some carbs, but not overdoing it.

That's because it's probably not right. As an example, if I eat a tuna steak salad with no bread or potatoes or anything, I'll need to bolus to cover the protein in the tuna so still have to have a small amount of fast acting insulin.

Some recently diagnosed Type 1s may be able to miss out the bolus, but you'll only know by trying. Watch out for a rise later, as sometimes BS can seem fine initially but then go up some hours later.

Slightly reducing your total daily carb intake can help weight loss :)

Apps like MyFitnessPal can help count carbs and calories, etc, and can be useful.
