Hi, I've just been diagnosed type 2 diabetic few days ago and this is actually first time I've admitted I have diabetes as still in denial or can't accept the fact my life has changed what seems like overnight :( not even had my appointment with doc or diabetic nurse with finer details yet all I got was a few sheets of a4 paper with a list of all the things up to that point I used to enjoy eating but no longer can ! But little on the amount of alcohol I am allowed as I like to have a drink at the weekend I'm by no means a raging alky just someone who likes to unwind with a pint or 2 or a few more than that even! Does anyone have similar problem ?

I still enjoy my drinks weekends and midweek. Often go out with the boys Fridays and drink far more pints than is reasonable. I see you're on diet only, so drinking won't hurt your diabetes in that if anything it lowers sugar levels - that's why people on insulin and similar have to be aware of hypos (very low blood sugar) if they drink. Of course, it won't do much to help with weight loss, so in that way it could stop you improving your diabetes. Some will say beer has carbohydrates ( lots) compared to other alcohol, and it's true, but testing shows me that the sugar lowering affect of alcohol has more effect than the carbs. (on me at least) That's not an excuse to go mad, but enjoy your drink in moderation. (huh hm) If you get put on meds, you may need to be a bit more careful
An endocrinologist specialising in diabetes told me "there's a lot of alcohol fascism in my profession and it's nonsense on the whole. No reason at all why you shouldn't enjoy a drink, even if you go on to metformin" the metformin is another point but this post is already long enough!
Good luck and cheers!

Agree with Grazer. I love a few pints on a Saturday watching my local football team, then usually have a few more when I get home. I would also have a few on Sunday with my dinner. Again as Grazer says, it in fact controls my BG levels better. I dont drink the rest of the week though.

Same here, a couple of glasses of dry white wine and a few cheeky vodkas at the weekend really lowers my bg the next morning and means I can have a little treat before bed too :)

Thanx to all for your comments I really appreciate it made me feel a little better knowing I can have a drink at the weekends just have to cut back to what my usual nights out with the bous would've been ! Still confused about the whole diabetes thing as not overweight, play football twice a week, gym, diet ok ( I thought ) didn't even have any symptoms ( although peed alot for couple of days ) I have acute asthma went for yearly review bit of glucose in urine blood was 5.3. Had to go back following week urine full of sugar blood 14.7 !!!! Confused.com :/ now I'm here looking for answers on a diabetes forum.
