Alcohol v. Diabetes

Hi all, newbie here so go easy lol.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but on the Diabetes.org website it says that if you're diabetic there is no reason to give up drinking and in fact you are allowed to have up to three units (if you're male) or two units (if you're female) a day. It just says to obviously be careful of the extra risk of a hypo.

It actually says that by drinking alcohol (not more than the RDA) can be beneficial for your heart.

Moderate alcohol consumption, in line with recommended daily guidelines, can be beneficial for your heart.

I've only started reading this thread to-day. What an interesting discussion. Personal choice and low carbing mean I limit myself to one large glass of white wine most nights. I sometimes change this to red wine. Don't drink lagers/ beers etc because they are high carb.
It's my choice to drink a little more over Christmas. I will and I will enjoy doing so.

You need to be careful of the carbohydrate content of alcohol, which can sometimes be high.
In large enough quantities, alcohol also reduces your blood sugar (which can be a problem if you are prone to hypos).

I don't drink much, but I sometimes have a few glasses of wine when I'm on a business trip and have less control over my carbohyrate intake. It usually works quite well, I rush back to my hotel expecting high numbers and end up getting low. (I scoffed 3 cupcakes and a steak sandwich at my wedding, and still ended up with my BG in the 5s.)

To be honest, I'd probably drink a bit more, if I wasn't trying to lose some weight.

Like everything else, you need to make your own decisions about what's good for you and what's not. I think most people think that drinking in moderation is not overly harmful and may even be beneficial.

If you drink.....STOP IT NOW! It does not and never will help manage your diabetes condition. It is only a means to drown your sorrows to help forget you have the disease. Non drinker.

I have to say that posting this kind of extreme and one sided comment will only have the exact opposite affect that you are seeking. Also by putting something such as "It is only a means to drown your sorrows to help forget you have the disease." is very unfair to the majority of people that drink because they want to, and are well aware of any affects whether positive or negative, and not because they are trying to escape the reality of having the disease.

Just because you don't drink does not give you the right to assume that everyone that does is in denial of having diabetes. Grow up and be objective in your views if you're going to try and force them upon people.
