Allergy to sweetners?

Hi, since being diagnosed with pre diabetes, I have cut out sugar and I have used artificial sweeteners in my tea. I have also developed a very itchy rash which has appeared on my hands, elbows, ankles and now knees. I have researched the internet and have discovered that people can be allergic to artificial sweeteners, could this be causing my rash? I have been to my doctor (could only get to see a locum) who said I had a viral rash or that I had eczema. He gave me steroid cream but it has had no affect. I was planning on going back next week but can't get an appointment with my actual doctor until 2 weeks time! Has anyone else experienced this? I'm obviously going to cut out the sweeteners from now on but it would be interesting to know if anyone else has had the same problem.

Some, but not many. Hate shopping at tesco!
Hi Liz, I have heard that too much of the artificial sugar also causes cancer. Diabetes UK had a sponsors walk recently and it was sponsored by Truvia. I don't know if that would have the same effect. I'm no good with artificial sugar that contains Aspartaime or similar in soft drinks as I'm asthmatic. It tightens up my airways. However recently Coca Cola have produced their 'Life' brand. This contains Stevia Glycosides which is a natural sweetener and on a Google research it actually reads that it is attractive for diabetics and others on a carnohydrate-controlled diet. If you can find a sugar substitute that contains this it could be better for you. Hope this can help you.

Hi,@LizFrog, Although sweeteners may not be that healthy, I think the locum who said you may a viral rash could be correct..
Have you recently tried a garment on for size or even touched a shopping trolley. Something as stupid as that than cause a viral rash, yet "Nobody Knows"
Normally a little itchy or dry skin relates to eczema.

Best of luck, and don't scratch your rash,:)

There is a lot of Myths out there, Scaremongering does not help any cause.
There is Nothing to my Knowledge that states "artificial sugar also causes cancer"

I suffer from eczema and have been drinking diet drinks for years - even before I had diabetes. However I probably have only 3-4 a week. I have not noticed any side affects which means that, for me, I either haven't had any or they were so minor I missed them!!
