Evening, Would anyone agree that the Atkins is very similar to low carbs / no carbs. We all went on it when it first came to the UK and, sure enough the weight came off. I never went on it as, at that time, my weight was under par if anything. But it really shifted weight off those family members who went on it.
The book that came with it criticised the word ' diet ' in that it implied failure and, a few months ago, there was a panorama episode that reported almost all diets failed and worse so, people actually put on more weight when they stopped the diet. Atkins goes on to say that his was not a diet but a different eating / lifestyle change and therefore was far less likely to fail.
So it seemed we'd struck gold and then I remembered watching a TV programme that claimed people who stayed on the Atkins had heart desease and there were claims of Heart attacks and a trend of CHD was claimed. In fact, Dr Atkins himself died of heart failure and my wife had a heart attack.
But, it's what you believe, my wife was so young to have a heart attack the Brompton Heart Hospital rang us and asked if we would come to London for tests as the senior professor there was convinced there was a link to younger women having heart problems whom may have started the menopause, they also chastised her for smoking 30 fags a day. Saving the need for 10 more paragraphs I can't see harm in the Atkins way provided you're prepared to go through some of the reactions your body makes and the key feature of this is tiredness and feeling drained out as your body reacts to a massive depletion in carbs. My wife was losing 5lbs a week and was eating well so it most definitely works and, as you go on in time, you can start to introduce back some of the carbs and find your own level as weight will creep back up by doing so. The books and the pack was passed around the family and as I remember everyone lost weight, IF they could cope with the rapid change in eating style, but for sure you won't go hungry, feel depraved etc as you would on a 'diet'
These are just my view so please do read up for yourself. For me I've grown a bit of a belly overnight, I've stopped eating completely for up to 5 days at a time and I do lose some weight, but everywhere but the belly and I hear that abdominal fat comes with the gig when you're T2. I persuaded my GP to let me have some diuretics as we tend to store fat in the 'apron' area and I read that this can sometimes be fluid. I nearly wet myself a few times and did consider pampers but they bulged under my suit, so they don't work so despite what you may read, diuretics will not work in weight loss in most cases, few lbs maybe but don't let that encourage you.
I watched another documentary in November on health clubs and the surge in revenue growth in this sector and, absolutely, we must EXCERCISE but it's the road to heartache if you're expecting big losses in weight very quickly, in my experiences anyway and the documentary did state that. But, must re emphasise that we must do exercise and, for me anyway, accept that exercise is not just for weight loss.
Would be keen to learn of ANY diets or plans to get weight off and keep it off, kind regards, Q..
