I am T1, Fire Service. Regarding employment, diabetes is classed as a Disability under The Equality Act which affords you certain rights. However, do I class myself as disabled ? NoNo is the simple answer. IMHO
I see from your profile that you are probably not likely to do the following:-
You could be excluded if you were type I. It's worth mentioning to your co directors or at least the MD, unless of course you are the MD.
- Armed forces
- Fire service
- Ambulance service
- Prison service
- Airline pilots and Airline Cabin crew
- Air traffic control
- Offshore work
Interesting - my DN volunteered the information (after agreeing no medication) that Viagra or similar was now free as a diabetic.
I think in some ways it is classed as a disability but not in others - it is a chronic illness and will stop you from getting certain jobs - Insurance companies and mortgage lenders will no doubt catgegourise you - I know you do get ceratin protection uder relevant disabilitiy laws, like time off from work for relevant basic medical appointments etc - interesting to now the full definitionAs above.
Am I Classed as disabled now I have diabetes ?
Dave
I do agree - without insulin they would not function properly - in the same was as someone with no leg or armDon't agree with what I've seen here. I would say yes.
"A physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities"
"A disadvantage or handicap, especially one imposed or recognized by the law"
There are many people that have diabetes who are professional athletes but as I see it they still have a disability. Their body isn't able to produce insulin, without injecting (type 1's obv.) they are dead. Someone who may have severe hearing loss but is able to have a hearing aid is still disabled.
By law? Can we get blue cards?
If it is more than 10 feet I'm in.Only if you have trouble walking the minimum distance (if you try to apply for one you'll see what that is)

Never thought too much about it. I may give it a try.Try applying. My mam is diabetic, she has a blue badge but only because she can't walk very far ,probably due to the statins? She got turned down, but appealed and now she has one. My father has one, he's not diabetic, but has had a stroke and can't walk far either
