can you tell us the brand of Corn Beef hash please and we may be able to help you decide better.

Also, is it carbs per 100g, or per serving and it it total carbs on the label, or just the sugars.

More info needed please.

remember to test before eating, then 2 hours after if you decide to try it. Then you will know how much your blood sugars go up, not just the top level.

In this instance Charles (celast) needs advice before he eats, as he is eating the wrong things and getting high readings, so we are trying to help him before he eats, rather than mopping up the mess later when his BG is sky high. You know me Lucy, I do say try and test - always, but Charles needs help selecting his food before consumption.

Hi,
The hash was from Marks,it was per 100 grams, had it tonight and will go onmy treadmill for 1/2 hour and tell you all what the result is, I am married (50 years next February) but cannot expect her to cook everything from scratch, but we are looking a labels all the time we look for 8 or under in Carbs per 100 grams, god knows what I shall do at xmas when she makes her famous trifles

What you could do was ask your sweetheart to cook you some extra veggies - it takes some 5-10 mins in a pot of water and if you replace about half of what you would have filled your plate with with brocolli, cauliflower etc (doesn't matter if they've been frozen), you will get a bit more fibre to buffer any carbs and also more nutritients. Just avoid the peas and corn, they're too sweet, carrots in moderation. Spinach is fine too, as is any cabbage, really, or shrooms for instance.

That is one easy way if you aren't already doing it, to increase the good stuff and decrease the proportion of less good stuff. You can learn to do that yourself very easily too, and you do that while she does the rest - might make her happy too, who knows :)

There are ways and ways of saying things and I am getting mighty fed up reading some of these "call a spade a spade" posts too. Charles has got to 75 without this bloody awful disease and now he has to adjust things. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was a deep understanding of nutrition, carbs, sugar, protein etc.

A big pat on the back and a badge for those of you that are such saints and never go above X on your meter, but for some of us it doesn't quite happen like that. I left school years ago, I don't need some "name" on a forum to talk down to me, I want adults to impart information to me in an understandable and friendly way to motivate and educate me. Maybe that's just me?!

Dunno what is wrong with this world these days, everything from driving, shopping and forums seems to revolve around aggression.

I think Charles deserves respect as well. Maybe some people weren`t taught that as children?

A real cheat, is to buy all veg prepared, then just pop them into a pan. Meat put in a little bit of butter, olive or coconut oil, even lard and fry. Fish, pop it into a bit of foil with a lovely big knob of butter. All meals cooked from scratch, the no hassle way. Even use frozen veg. That will save the time and trouble of preparing things, yet meals are still low carb, home cooked and delicious. Do try to stay away from the pre packaged ready meals and things, they aren't good for you, and home made can be so quick and easy, or half the ready meal and top up with veg like Mileana suggested, much better for you.

As for Christmas trifle, it's a long way off yet, but why shouldn't you have some? No harm in a small amount at Christmas time, none at all.

Ouch, that hurt. I hope it wasn't aimed at me, I am seriously trying to only suggest the next logical step.

I am fairly saint-ish when it comes to myself, but then I am 33 and coming out of a major illness that had me on my sofa for 2 years because I couldn't walk.

I have a grannie with type 2 - she interprets the normal 'NHS' dietary advise of cutting away the fatty bits of meats as cut it away, and then eat it first, so I know that habits die hard, and that for someone raised around the war, anything that will keep you feeling full, fat, potatoes etc, is a very big part of what is 'good' and keeps you alive. That doesn't change over night.

I sometimes find that things can get a bit heated when we forget that it is really a choice and all we can do is try to give advice and solutions that are practical at the same time as trying to explain how we think and why. On the other hand, I generally choose to interpret things not as aggression, but rather as caring for each other.

I have a feeling some of our posters above know each other better than you and me, which gives people some other liberties.

I hope you calm down again - some days are better than others and sometimes it is easier to have a button pushed.

:)

No, don't worry it was aimed at me - water off a ducks back!!

It amuses me why I should want to be aggressive to some one I have never met. If I wanted to be aggressive I would hardly go out my way to offer newbies help and support.

Oh well C'est la vie

I am perfectly calm and no Defren, it wasn't aimed at anybody in particular but an observation of what sometimes happens on this forum.

Ali

Then I would like to apologise for whatever it was I said, Ali.

If you want, you can send me a suggestion for improvements. I wouldn't mind learning a bit more politeness, you can never have too much of that in a harsh world.

Thank you.

I don't care who it's aimed at. As I said on this or another thread, Charles is now asking what is safe to eat, rather than eating it and asking why he is getting huge spikes. I call that a result. Yes, I know he is 75, I still would not want to see him suffer any complications, and if that means I get things over the way I did so be it. If Charles is upset by what I have said and how I have said it I will unreservedly apologies on this forum!

To come to a forum at the age of 75 and ask for help is a brave step, taking advice may not be easy especially if it's not what you want to hear, and did any of us want to hear what we did re diet? I know I didn't. I am happy to speak with Charles in PM or publicly, but what I am not prepared to do, is see a man a little younger than my own mother suffer through ignorance, and I know I was VERY ignorant of diabetes when I came here.

Like I said, there are ways and ways of saying things.

The more education people can get the better, but I know how I would impart that information but maybe that's just me.

Yes, well perhaps there are. I'm not perfect I don't claim to be, so now and again I **** things up, say things wrong, get things wrong. I think it's called being human. So I shall defer to you, and step out of this thread.

Somebody on here said no to corned beef hash, but on the contents it says its only 7.8 carbs, it leaves me perplexed

Hi Charles

Got a pack of Tesco's Everyday corned beef here. It says 1.0g / 100g so that's absolutely fine.

Blooming heck that`s low. I wonder if Asda do anything similar :?:

Charles is talking about a hash, not pure corned beef, hence the carbs are higher I guess than xyzzy's pack?

I was getting excited then Ali. Corned beef hash for 1g carb per 100g`s. Darn.

Ooops didn't realise there was a difference but anyway 7.8 / 100g doesn't sound too bad but it obviously depends on how much you eat and how tolerant to carbs Charles is. I assume he wants to keep within safety levels as otherwise why bother asking the question in the first place. Charles eat some trifle at Christmas you don't need to be good all the time. I try and stay good on normal days but will let things slip a bit on special days. Can't get more special than the wife's trifle at Christmas in my opinion.

Oh and welcome back Jeannemum missed you
