I was given the above tablets on Monday last, by a Neurologist, as pain relief for a couple of crushed discs causing right sided pain. my bs's have doubled since starting them so I have today stopped.

just to warn you just in case you are prescribed.

having back surgery sometime in future.

I took them for IBS, definitely put my BS up, was only on a small dose too. Hope they can find you something else to take.
 
Thanks Denise, my dose was only 10mg but my did it affect me. Am going to take paracetemol until I can get further help. Pauling
 
I take 30mg of Amitriptyline at bed time. I am on quite heafty pain killers and they were not working and I was having trouble sleeping. My consultant put me on the drug to boost the effectiveness of the pain relief, and also as they are a mild sedative. I won't be taking them again. Not only because I have lost weight and so the pain is not so bad, but also because I am fighting to keep my BG Low, and these it seems are fighting against me. Thanks for posting this.
 
I have taken them in the past they didn't affect my bg but they didn't work as pain relief either!

I am also on the same drug (20mg) but because my sugars have been unstable at times i haven't really noticed whether my Bs are raised because of other complications.
But thanks for the warning regarding the drug.
I had my facet joints injected last november 2011 and am seeing the pain specialist on 20/04/2012 i will speak to them about it.

I had amitriptyline prescribed for bulging discs and a back muscle tear which trapped nerves in my neck and back after I landed on my head playing rugby! But it was prescribed as a muscle relaxant along side 60mg of codeine and 500mg of Naproxen, to be honest for the short term change in my sugars I was soooooooo glad of the relief. It shouldn't just be diagnosed for pain relief on its own as I was told it is a muscle relaxant to be used in conjunction with other medication. I was on it for about 3/4 months.
 
I was presribed Nortriptyline earlier this week, which is basically the same drug. The accompanying leaflet advised consulting with your doctor before taking if you were diabetic, so presumably blood glucose changes are a recognised side effect.
 
For the first time I didn't take any last night. I haven't seen any benefit in my BG's yet, but it may take a day or two.
 
Another side effect of this drug was that I put on weight ....
 
I have taken them in the past and although they didn't effect my blood glucose I did rave round the house like a madman! Didn't take a 2nd..

I take Nortiptyline (20mg at night) for nerve pain from a bulging disc and overgrown arthritic facet joints. It has no adverse effects on me whatsoever, including BGs, and certainly zapped the pain. Before that I'd been on the max dose of Tramadol with little effect. I also take Volsaid Slow Release 75mg (diclofenac) as an anti-inflammatory and pain killer. On a good day I only need 1 in 24hrs, on a bad day 2. That combination works well for me, though I always have a tiny nagging lower back pain, worse if I spend a long time at the computer. My BGs are stable, mostly in the upper 4s and lower 5s.

My GP asked me to try Naproxen instead of the Volsaid because Naproxen is supposed to be easier on the stomach and seems less related to heart problems. By the time I got to 1000mg twice a day, and couldn't stand long enough even to make a cup of coffee, he gave me the Volsaid back .

I once took Amitriptyline for a back injury, very effective drug at treating the pain but I had the most horrendous nightmares when taking them, they make you feel like you are spaced-out all the time :crazy:
 
Seems a funny old drug this one, I was prescribed it a couple of years ago for my spondylitis (arthritis of the spine) and it did ease the pain as I remember but it made me anxious and unable to sleep at night, I would lay awake with all sorts running through my head. Cant say I recall any rise on bg levels though.
 
Amitriptyline is actually an old fashioned anti-depressant, not often used as an anti-d now, but because of the way it works it can be useful in smaller doses as a pain relief.. It works on the neurves...

Don't know if it pushes up BG, have you ruled out other factors, such as an infection brewing or perhaps more being more stressfull than you normally are?

I have been on 50mg for 9 years for insomnia and recently now and again 75mg for nerve pain. They were my miracle pill as this was the only thing that would help me to sleep. I had to stop taking them now as they dont go with my new anti D's Citalpram. The only neg affect i personal got from them was a little weight gain but i couldn't care less about that. All i cared about was sleep. :yawn: :yawn: :yawn:

I always check new medicines and vitamins on that website.
