An ACTUAL diet plan

Hi

I've seen many good tips here but what I REALLY want is a sensible 7 or 14 or 30 day ACTUAL diet/healthy living plan so that I can reverse my pre-diabetic state.

I want a meal-by-meal/day by day list of (recommended) meals with ingredients where I can buy the ingredients easily at a local supermarket in the UK (preferably Lidl who charge sensible prices).

Is this too much to ask?

Is there anything you don't eat or have allergies to?

No - no allergies that I know of. I DO have a sweet tooth as well as a savoury tooth sadly. I received a letter in the post from my GP saying I was pre-Diabetic so I want to avoid the condition of course.

Probably!
Id suggest having a look at the blood sugar diet which is an 8 -12 week programme. There is a book (8 week programme and recipes) and also a website ( member recipes etc + 12 week programme which, for the 12 week plan, I think theres a charge for)

Did they suggest any options or treatment; or do they just want to wait until it gets worse before doing anything?

All I have had is the letter stating I am in the pre-Diabetic stage and that I should make an appointment to see the surgery diabetic nurse

Possibly see the nurse first. But I think diet doctor has a low carb challenge with meal plans. @Brunneria will know.

That's good; although you might find the eat lots of carbs diet advice irrational. What was your HbA1c result? You'll get plenty of helpful advise on here. I found Jenny Rhule's booked Blood Sugar 101 very useful.

If you want a day by day meal by meal plan to work to, the blood sugar diet book has that. :bookworm:
It has a 4 week diet plan each day planed out and over 60 pages of recipes which you can substitute for any of the meals.

Diet is only half the battle what exercise are you doing Paulus?

P.s. A lot of us have found the diabetic nurse hasn't got a clue what there talking about and may try to persuade you that following any low carb diet like the one in this book. Is wrong.
Just ignore them if they do, you have the right idea. ;)

Blimey - there are loads of "blood Sugar Diet" books on Amazon. Is there one recommended for people in the UK?

BTW - thanks for everyone's help so far.

Hi and weclome @Paulus6969 :)

There are quite a few different meal plans available, and they all target something slightly different.

As I understand it

the Bloodsugar diet targets weight loss primarily, and has lowish carbs (to control blood glucose)
Dietdoctor keeps carbs very low (between 20 and 50 g carbs a day) which often results in a bit of weight loss
the Newcastle Diet is very low calorie with the focus on weight loss which may normalise blood glucose

Are you wanting weight loss at all? Or is your primary goal to normalise blood glucose?
If it is the latter, then www.dietdoctor.com provides a wide range of non-vegetarian options, with a meal and recipe plan that can be personalised. It even gives full shopping lists, which I found to be a great help. There are a heck of a lot of recipes, from drinks, desserts and snacks, to main courses. So if the ordinary plan results in too much weight loss, you can just keep adding in low carb snacks until your weight stabilises.

There are a couple of downsides to low carb eating though - firstly almost everything needs to be prepared at home. No processed and packaged foods. So more work and more washing up! Secondly, it takes a bit more organisation.

Good luck with it all, and please come back and keep asking questions. :)

This is the one people are talking about here.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/8-Week-Blo...70777&sr=1-1&keywords=8+week+blood+sugar+diet

Personally I think it still has too many carbs. but maybe for pre diabetes and depending on how you ate before it could be fine.
Also try to remember its not so much a "diet" in the slimming sense more a wake up call to eat proper food and cut out the c**p forever.

So depending on how long "a little while" is the answer is none.

Oversimplified version. :bookworm:
  • You have to much sugar in your blood.
  • Change of diet will stop you adding more sugar.
  • Excersise will burn up the sugar that is there.

Exercise and change of eating habits will lower your blood sugar, putting you back in the non diabetic range and stop you from becoming diabetic.

Job done. ;)

While a diet plan for days/weeks is a great idea for some people please be aware that while you are following one you would be wise to learn how and why food choices affect your body. I would advise that you still learn about reading the labels on food packaging as you go. As we are all different then a meal recipe for one person may have a different affect on another person. This is where your blood glucose meter comes in.

I started out with the Blood Sugar Diet recipe book and although the recipes are smashing some of the ingredients I found to be quite expensive. Good luck and well done for taking the bull by the horns and addressing this condition.

P.S
As to excercise, my opinion is that good management of Pre Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes is 90% diet dependant.

I agree with that. I don't do any more (or less) exercise than I did before I was diagnosed, it was a low carb diet that made me lose weight and get down to non diabetic BG. Exercise is good for general health though so I would still recommend it.
