Originally the King Charles spaniels had a longer nose, but were bred for their little squashed up faces when pugs were "high fashion". The Cavaliers were bred back selectively for their longer muzzles from suitable Charlies in the late 1920s to get back closer to the original look, and were given the prefix "Cavalier" to distinguish them when they were recognised as a separate breed.Llewellin Setter
