HIGH blood sugars!
i have had good blood sugar control all day but this evening for some reason before I went to bed I had a high reading of 15 mmol/l and I can't take this anymore so I think I am just going to some time go and overdose please can someone help me if they have had these bedtime highs?

u need to eat clearly - but you don't say what your BG was during the day nor what was eaten.

I'm now a salad and meat guy - I've kinda stabilised at around 6 - 8.

If you remove all carbs and sugar - bread, cereals, rice, potatoes, pasta etc you should over time reduce your BG.

15 is definitely to high - target 10 as a start point - also I'm assuming your taking medication. If so then this will help with the above.

Persistents is the key - until you get it lower you run the risk of long term organ damage so the balls in your court.

Sorry yes I take rapid acting insulin and I ate rice as my only carb and not a tremendous amount and still injected 14 units. I woke up with a 5.3 mmol/l blood sugar and was there all day even 2 hours after dinner I was 7.5 but then before bed is was 15 I can't cope with this I know about long term damage and I worry about it but I just think that if it happens I will just kill myself

Are you also on a long acting insulin? I had highs before bed when I was on a single dose of levemir (long acting) because it wasnt lasting the full day. It cleared up when I switched to two doses 12/hrs apart

Also! If you have high fat meals, it can cause a delayed spike in blood sugar a couple hours after your meal!

hi @james122 if you are having suicidal thoughts, please contact the Samaritans - www.samaritans.org

Have you sought help from your diabetic team for these thoughts? Hopefully the will be able to offer you some reassurance that these highs are doing any immediate damage and there is a route to achieving control that you are comfortable with.

High blood sugars will impact on mood & rational thinking. Diabetes is strongly associated with depression. If you raise this with your diabetic team they will be able to help you cope with these thoughts - please seek help.

I had this too, do u take long lasting insulin at night? Mine would run out before the next dose was due? Try speaking to your team as they changed the type of insulin I was taking or as cassandra13 said, try split your doses X

@james122, your waking and bg levels throughout the day were excellent so that is great news, maybe you need to look at your evening meal and see if there anything there that can cause a delayed bg spike, as Cassnadra says if the meal has a high fat/high carb content this can raise bg levels several hours after eating, if unsure what to do then do speak with your DSN or Consultant.

Morning James, sorry to hear of your bedtime readings, if it's any consolation I get them too, what's getting you down though is it the reading itself or they way it's making you feel ? Don't feel despair they can be tweaked, my favourite saying with diabetes is that it's a marathon not a sprint, you will get there ;)

Have you also been in contact with your team to discuss your control ?
