Where do i start, if i,m allowed, as i do feel guilty at not posting on forum,
most of time don't know what to post, so i just mooch round just reading some of the posts, printing stuff out, as before, trying to make sense of things ,( i have also been away a couple of times, since i last posted anything proper,) as i,m still very confused about things, been to see doctor today, and it seems i am being taken of strips, i went to ask for lancets , and was told to see the nurse 2morra, also told that N I CE,S guidelines is not to give strips to type 2,s,that it isn't necessary to test, huh, i don't know how, to tackle it with nurse, i have been dreading it, as i did anticipate it happening, have not been testing trying to stock pile the strips, for times when i felt i really needed to test, but have got right down on how many i have now, and off course don't know what to make of my levels, i have had bad nights not sleeping, having conversations ,in my head with the nurse and doctors about this happening, at mo, my average, again, is over 7days 6.8/ 14days 6.8/ 30days 6.6
would anyone care enough to comment, what is the minimum tests i could get away with, as i feel, because i am slightly underweight 9st-13lbs height 5ft 7ins, and am looking after myself as much as i can, that this is part of the problem, if i was overweight, and eating whatever i liked,i would get more attention, its been 6months now, and i haven't seen a dietitian, or had a retinopathy test, mentioned this to doc too, again she said see the nurse, and that it takes time, can anyone give me some basic guidelines please, as i feel , i have totally lost my way, and am feeling, is it really worth "bothering", or even if i,m "bothering" to much maybe.

I,M WORRYING A LOT ABOUT THE WEIGHT LOSS,
I WAS 11st -4lbs at dx, in May i am now 9st-7lbs doc weighed me today
i,m eating loads of cheese, meats, eggs, cream, veg, etc nuts for snacks and drink red wine and the odd whisky ,( i know it, sounds, good,) and still keep losing weight, where will it end

Jeenie, your figures are good. When you go to the nurse,Jeenie,be confident and not panicky as this with make her tell you that you are worrying too much and that you should not test! Tell her that you are testing so that you know which foods are affecting your blood sugar levels so that you can keep you blood sugar under control.Have you anything written down ,BS levels, foods etc take these with you.Show her that you are actively trying to deal with your diabetes in a mature, sensible fashion.I hope this helps you.If she refuses you strips you can buy them but they can be expensive.

Hi Sue, thank you too, yes i have loads written down in a book, , tests , diet, activities , even moods sometimes , have taken my book with me before, but she only glanced at it , i will try and get her to look at it more thoroughly 2morra , i do think, maybe i,m panicking, will try not to, have looked on ebay for strips, havnt seen any yet , not for the meter i have

Hi Jeenie,
I went through the same problems as you with weight loss, you need to push your Doc for a referral to a dietitian I did and got a lot of good advice, whilst I've not got back to my previous I have gained enough to get back over the 11st mark and its pretty stable. I was told to eat 4 meals a day, and snack in between. I'm on a high fat diet that includes all dairy products even told to use full fat milk, I use 6 or 7 pints a week. I Know its hard but you need to pester your doc for strips, my Dietitian wanted me to test 4 times daily for 1 month so she could see the effects of the new diet on my BG. Luckily I have no problems up to now getting my strips on prescription.

Best of luck keep your chin up and let us know how you get on.

Hi jeenie

Your 7, 14 and 30 day averages are good, how many tests did you do to arrive at these numbers. If you had an HbA1c on diagnosis I would ask for another to get a good idea how you have done over the past 3 months. As I say your figs. are good especially when you consider you are getting these numbers on no meds. and diet only. As for number of tests per day, once when you get up and 2 hours after each of your meals should be ok, then just before you turn in. As I say get a new HbA1c to know were you stand. Then come back and let us know how you get on.

Keep your chin up, many would love to see your numbers on their meter.

Kind regards Eddie

HI GRAHAM , THATS PRETTY USEFULL TO KNOW , THANKS

Jeenie

Im sorry you are having such a hard time.I know its really hard to be strong when you feel so down but you seem to be doing really well. I know it just seems like the harder we try sometimes the more we are branded zealouts/obsessives but If i get any vibes from medics about this I just tend to ask them 'what would you do if it was you'? . As a type 1 I am 'lucky' (cough!) to have test strips on prescription and can't imagine how Id feel if I wasnt able to monitor what my bg was up to on any given day.
If i were you I'd find the NICE guidlelines on testing, and quote it at them. If you dont feel strong enough to do it, put it in writing.
Also, look up the UKPDS study in type 2s. It comments on the benefits of intensive controls and may give you some jargon and further stuff to quote at them. It does conclude eventually that HBA1c's go up over time and inn their eyes it signifies a change in beta cells and deterioration in pancreas. If this is the case, then how will you know unless you test? I dont think it is inevitable and I think they miss the point that after the study was over, Im sure a great many people were just 'left to it' without the support so again, another reason for needing testing strips.

You sound quite down generally at present and Im betting that potentially not being able to control and monitor what is going is contributing to that. If so, tell your GP that you feel down and this is part of the reason for it. I know that if I was Type 2 there would be obvious differences as to how I feel now in terms of management of my diabetes, but my consistent feeling would be one of worry for the future, concern re complications and all the other ones we ALL share.

It just makes my blood boil that they wont give you the tools to help you stay well. To me its as bad as refusing someone medication. So, get angry about it, and see how you get on.

As for the retinopathy check - I was told by consultant that my GP is responsible for making the referral, preferably within the first 3 months so the GP is just passing the buck to the nurse.

Chin up. You're doing all you can at this point for yourself

Jeenie, please send me your weightloss formula. I'm losing so slowly, and I'm getting frustrated. Once you know which foods affect you in which ways, You can reduce your testing. If you haven'y got to that stage yet, they should not have taken you off strips. NICE says you should have them to learn with. Contact your local PALS group. They might be able to help you.
