Hi.

I have been on Metformin 2x 500 a day since i was diagnosed as type 2 back in October last year.
About 8-9 weeks ago i changed from getting my prescription from one pharmacy to another. The Metformin is now from a different supplier. About 5-6 weeks ago i started to get pains in my lower left stomach and feeling quite sick, also i had diarrhea quite alot. Visited the docs for a once over and nothing felt out of place in my stomach so basically it was come back in 4-6 weeks time if it's still the same, Would a change of supplier possibly cause the pain??
I stopped taking Metformin last week so how long would it stay in my system for??

Metformin can cause stomach cramps and nausea in some people, I suffered some stomach cramps but they did go away after a while.

Metformin is marketed by many companies and is sold under several different names like "Glucophage" and "Sukkarto" to name a couple that I have used in the past but the drug is the drug and a change of supplier is unlikely to cause problems but of cause unlikely doesnt always mean never.

I would mention it to your doctor and he/she may specify a brand that you are happy with, I doubt there is not much difference in price but pharmacists are likely to supply the cheapest brands they can find for reasons of profit and doctors to keep down their costs.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

My pharmacy seems to switch between three different brands and if I get a different one I get the original dodgy stomach for a day or so.
I know the drug is the same but the fillers etc are not.

I'd check to see if they haven't changed from slow release to the normal ones in error, these people in the pharmacy are only human and an error could have occurred? I'm thinking as you had no prior issue with them you may have been on the slow release ones which tend to be more tolerable, and a change to the other would certainly be and issue for your insides if you've been used to the other.
