Hi all
Just to say hello. I'm type 2 diagnosed in November 2016. It was a bit of a shock and still trying to get my head around it all. I must admit my Doc and the surgery have been great. Full set of eye scans within weeks and a list of dos and donts. Have managed so far to reduce my BS levels from 14+ to below 9. Diet and weight loss has helped.
The biggest problem I had was my life time addiction to Coke. I'm 53 bty but originally an expat from Hong Kong so a sixties child. It was there that I started my Coke addiction.
I can not believe how hard it's been to give that up. The craving has still not gone away even after 4 months.
Should there be a sugar addicts association like other addictions?

Well done on getting those BG down - that's great news.

I'm tagging @daisy1 for the new members information which is useful.

Yes sugar has been likened to cocaine in terms of the reaction in the brain, I don't have the stuff these days but if I do I can feel my brain suddenly start to light up like an electric grid ! What I found more frightening was going through my store cupboard at home and finding sugar in so many products, even the humble stock cube. Good luck on the road ahead, your body will certainly appreciate your efforts ;)

Hi @Oldandbold .. and welcome
I was in a similar position as you and many others when I was diagnosed T2 in early Feb. Since joining this forum, though, the folks here have given me so much info, advice and support that I am now much more confident about the journey ahead. It's still early for me but, in my experience, it gets easier .. very quickly

Managing and controlling your diabetes through exercise, diet and testing your Blood Glucose seems to be the best way forward. For me, committing to an LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) lifestyle and testing 3-5 times a day, seems to be working .. I have lost a stone and a half since my diagnosis and my BG levels are down from 12.5 to around 6. There is a wealth of info, relevant advice and positive support about LCHF on the forum .. so ask your questions and be assured that you will receive the answers that you need ..

I see that one of our Mods has already tagged @ daisy1 for you and I would suggest that you read up on the Low Carb Program in the valuable information that she will soon be sending you. You might also find the discussion on the Low Carb Diet forum helpful .. and the following websites ...
Low Carbs in 60 Seconds
Low Carb 10-week Programme

Maybe a bit early yet but if you are considering self-testing, try the website at: https://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/ for the SD Codefree meter or: http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-blood-glucose-meter/ who distribute the TEE 2 meter, which is free. The costs of testing comes down to the ongoing charges for test strips and lancets. I'm testing 3-4 times a day which works out at around £10 to £12 per month for the two packages above but, more importantly, I now know what my BG levels are .. and I will be able to manage them
Hope this helps
