Hi all
Ok I got diagnosed 2 months ago and although advised not to, I got myself a Codefree glucose meter. I can understand the need to know about what does and does not raise the numbers. I have eliminated pastry as a huge no no, it pushed my numbers up to an 18.8..

However, I am having trouble discovering why I am struggling to get any readings below 11. I've tested before and after meals as well as last thing at night and first thing in the morning. I did fast for 16 hours and managed an 8.2 but given the advice of regular meals this seems a little over the top

I am very overweight and awaiting bariatric surgery (this month) so that will help a lot but I still worry that I am unable to identify the bad stuff.

I'm a vegetarian, eat low carb in general and exercise daily. I am also on metformin.

All ideas and advice greatfully received
Many thanks
Marty

if you count the grams of carbs you eat on a day... you can find out how few you can eat before they raise blood glucose..

here you can find the amount of carbs in every kind of vegetable per 100 gram... http://www.nutrientfacts.com/

Hi @MartyB Will you be going on a milk diet before your surgery? Why not post a typical day's food and we can see if there is anything that stands out as a glucose raising culprit?

Thank you for the responses
I'm going to be on 3 pints of semi skimmed a day for a week
I'll also be allowed
Green salad
Almost any type of veg except potatoes
Bell peppers
1 Muller lite youghurt a day
Tomatoes
sugar free jelly
Marmite in a drink (good job I like it)
and an additional 2 pints of non sugar fluids.

That should put my numbers down. Am starting it late next week but might go for it sooner

Just a few thoughts - please check the information rather than take my word for it - other people are much more knowledgeable than I am.
All veg that grows below ground should be limited.
Peas and sweetcorn also limited
I eat full fat yogurt (generally Greek Yogurt) as it has less sugar in it and I react to artificial sweeteners as if they were sugar except for the Stevia one.
I purchase the Lactose Free Milk as it tastes better to me but also has the sugar taken out as I understand it.

I am very over weight but not to the point of surgery and over the last couple of years I have gradually lost 4 stone in weight so I am sticking to the way I have come to eat.
I do test my blood sugars and I have learnt that all wheat based products really send my sugar levels up into double number scores. Rice does the same regardless of different types. I allow myself a couple of small new potatoes as they are not too bad sugar wise and I am about to learn to do roast veg as an option.

I wish you well and hope any of the above might be of use or interest to you.

Many thanks for the info.
It's interesting to see how many people are willing to help
Thank you all for your valuable input
Some good advice there

I find that I need to measure on a meal by meal basis. My total carbs for the day are pretty much irrelevant - what matters is how much I eat at one time.

yes you have a good point there... it means the most... to control that spikes do not get too high
