Another question on spikes - help!

And what about readings AFTER 2 hours?
The other day I was 6.6 two hours after starting dinner and thought "yippee" but tested again half an hour later and it had risen a whole point to 7.6. Obviously the meal had a low glycemic load so took longer to get through the system so to speak. I am at a loss to understand some of this.
Remember these home meters are a guide. They can be up to 20% out. Your 7.6 reading could have actually been 6.1 ( 7.6-20% ). Don't get too stressed by individual readings. Look for continued highs or trends and act accordingly. It's good to be consciously trying to achieve constant readings in target range but sometimes diabetes doesn't play ball and just throws you a rogue reading which is difficult to explain. It's dynamic and there are many factors that can have an influence on your levels. Even worrying about high readings can have a negative affect and cause higher readings lol !

if you have carbs and fat the spike is often post the 2hr, it's called the pizza effect.
when you are testing food I've seen it said that test at 1 and 2 hr, if the 2hr is higher, test at 3hr.
personally, if it's going to be a meal you will have once a month or more, I'd do 1,2,3,4hr tests as a one off and that meal wouldn't need retesting. most people only have a couple of dozen meals that they eat

Thank you Jack. That explains it very well. I do try to follow the glycemic load of a whole meal, combining my carb allowance with fats and protein, so probably my own peaks will be later than 2 hours.
