Hi, I requested a copy of my medical records and found a letter from over a month ago regarding my current situation. Although I had a negative Anti-GAD status it said I had a relatively slim phenotype. I have no idea what this means! It goes on to say that the way I present, my diabetes is due to a relatively low insulin reserve. I should go onto a basal bolus insulin strategy relatively quickly. No one has contacted me about this. Can anyone explain what the slim phenotype means please?

Are you a slim person, or are your family generally slim?

I wouldn't be alarmed by the use of "relatively soon". I interpret it as an assessment you will need to use insulin, but not critically today. Do you have an appointment to discuss your tests? If not, it could be worthwhile calling to try to sort something out.. Who was the letter addressed to?

Hi. To me this implies probable Late onset T1 (LADA). Many of us, like you, will have negative GAD but be LADA as things other than auto-immunity can cause beta cell death such as viruses. I would ask for a C-Peptide test if you haven't had one. Going onto Basal/Bolus when you can't control your BS adequately makes sense.

Thank you. I am on the higher end of normal but do carry my weight around the middle. Family generally slim. Spoke to hospital today. Have to detail a week's food input along with bs levels to see if I can improve my diet (I don't see this possible). Will then have an appointment with consultant to decide if I need insulin. I feel a bit better now, it was just that I found out by accident.

Thanks. Really don't know why they didn't do c-peptide when they did the GAD! Hopefully get to the bottom of it within a month or two and I start to feel better. I just feel that for the past couple of years that I was a rubbish diabetic and it was all my fault even though I know I shouldn't!

Tripping over something like that is never the best way to find out.

I hope you're sorted and more comfortable very soon
