My son in law was prescribed champix (varenicline) and within two weeks began to feel unwell. He was found to have developed type 1 diabetes and his blood glucose levels were off the chart. He was perfectly healthy until this and I checked on the web and see that in the USA the same generic drug is linked to sudden pancreatic failure and there are already court cases being linked to this.
This drug has only been available in the UK for a while and there seems to be nothing coming up about this side effect over here. Is any one looking into this?
The FDA also received 544 reports suggesting varenicline may be related to a loss of glycemic control, including many cases of weight loss or gain that could have alternative causes, but also identified numerous cases of symptoms and laboratory tests consistent with new onset diabetes.
