Any advice about stomach ulcer?

Hi everyone,

I'm T2, taking Alogliptin only for my diabetes right now, and I will admit right off the bat that my diabetes has not been well controlled at all in the last few months due to severe mental health issues.
I was referred to A&E yesterday by my GP as I was having really bad upper abdominal and chest pain. She suspected there could be an issue with my heart, they did a few tests in the hospital and although my heart rate was very fast they didn't think I was having a heart attack. Was sent for a chest x-ray and whatever that has shown and the pain and swelling in my belly had the Dr convinced I have a stomach ulcer.
Obviously I will need to have an endoscopy to confirm but she is positive that's what is happening. I was put on saline drip to bring my heart rate down and she said my lactic acid levels were very high in blood tests. I was in so much pain (still am). I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what kind of foods you were eating while in a bad flare up?
I have no appetite at all and have barely eaten anything in the last 24 hours, just drinking water but I know I'll have to start eating again eventually. Lots of the stuff I've seen online would not work well with a low carb diet which I know now I have to start following again, this has really scared me with the amount of pain I'm in, also getting recurrent abcesses which the GP has told me is due to the uncontrolled diabetes. Possibly just be living on eggs, chicken and berries until this calms down, which are all apparently ok with stomach ulcer. Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

Not had an ulcer whilst being diabetic but had one years ago, also my dad suffered from them all his life since he was in his teens.

As you say, eggs, scrambled, poached, boiled.chicken, white fish, tuna, salmon & smoked salmon, milk puddings that can be made low carb, jellies. Puréed or well cooked low carb veggies, cream cheese, dad liked tripe - not for me! Liver not for me either lol Avoid carbonated drinks at all costs. Anything fizzy is the worst thing you can drink for stomach issues of any kind. If you can bake, low carb cakes. You can make low carb custard with eggs & cream. Berries were out for me & my dad unless they were pushed through a sieve to remove the seeds, but things may be different now

There’s a lot more they can do these days than when my dad was young. He had all sorts of medicines & potions - both of us had a special course of antibiotics that change the gut biome & everything settled down & I’ve no trouble from ulcers anymore & neither did dad, I do have other gut problems now though and my dad did too. I’ve definitely got my fair share of his genes!

Hi @Maggie75 , I suffer with peptic ulcer disease. I’ve had it for decades. The first signs of ulcers was a bout of vomiting. I had no pain. I had a second bout of vomiting, but this time there was some blood coming up. I went to the hospital and was admitted. I remember I was tachycardic (HR at > 150bpm ) .I was admitted straight from triage . This was at Barnet General) I was still living in the UK at the time. I was on an IV whilst in causality . I was put on Proton Pump Inhibitors. They tested me for the bacteria H.Pylori which is one of the main causes of stomach ulcers. I was negative, but if you are positive for the bacteria you get a course of antibiotics .
I had a stomach scope which confirmed peptic ulcers I had two of them. I continued with the PPI’s for a couple of years. I came off them, and was able to keep my stomach acid in check by avoiding acidic and alkaline foods and spices . I eventually had to go back on them and I am still on PPI meds .
If your stomach ulcers are caused by the bacteria H.Pylori then once that is eradicated with the antibiotics then maybe you will not need to stay on PPIs or a particular diet.

Are they sending you for a helicobacter pylori test? if it's caused by that a simple course of antibiotics kills the bug and your stomach (should) recover.

I was diagnosed with helicobactor pylori back in the late noughties.
A course of antibiotics sorted it out.
No issues with the symptoms since, of ulcers.
