I have found out to my cost that hot weather can effect my diabetes quite dramatically. Diagnosed diabetic 3yrs ago (type 2 diet only) but not been this hot since diagnosed. The temp in my van (cab) regularly hits 130 degrees F during the day and I spend 60% of the day in it. No air con just wind down windows. I found advice (on line) that says avoid working in hot weather , easier said than done.(any tips welcome on how to cope with temps) I am not a lover of rabbit food (salad) what is best to eat during hot spells for a lunch. I am taking 3-6 ltrs of chilled water a day during the hot spell and trying to eat my main meal in the eve.(any advice on what best to eat during these hot spells for lunch accepted gratefully)iand64

I have heard that blood sugar is harder to control in hot weather but I never experienced it until now. Suddenly I am getting numbers from my meter which imply that I have to have no carb meals.

Normally I can eat a few carbs with meals and be fine but now I am in the 8's with just meat and veg. I have no other way of dealing with it but to further reduce quantity and have no carbs.

Are you certain you have not left the heater on in your cab. That is a very high temperature.

[/Van vent is off and windows open. the temp recorded was on my dash and 3 days ago hit 144 degrees for 3hrs.guess that's the price to pay for a large window.quote]

It's certainly been too hot and I'm too lethargic (no, that's not another word for lazy - how could you think such a thing :D ) to cook, but if I have to eat another salad I am going to screeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaam!!!!! I think I'm beginning to resemble the Munch painting :D

Hi

I am generally in the 6s for my early morning fasting and then I manage to go back into the 6s after eating. During the last couple of weeks I just can't seem to make it out of the 7s, and today I felt personally insulted by my blood sugar when it was in the 8s after a CHICKEN SALAD and that was 3hours post prandial. So, just like the Squire, I feel as if I have to more or less, decide that food is off the menu.

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH

It makes me want to cry with frustration.

What more can we do ???????

I have just had a glass of wine, to see if that helps .......

As a safety practitioner I'd say that '... 3 days ago I hit 144 degrees for 3 hrs', you are putting yourself at risk of heat stroke let alone any complications regarding diabetes. Speak with your employer or alternatively pull over and take an extended break until the cab cools. Anything around 104F is fever level and the body will wrongly (in this case) try to compensate for that making you feel more ill than you really are.

Further to my earlier notes:
From 1979 to 2003, more than 8,000 people died from exposure to excessive heat in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More people died from heat during that period than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined.
Beware at the temps you've mentioned you are seriously at risk of heat stroke.

I'm currently living in the tropics, and am assuming I have acclimatised. We're currently enjoying 30+ every day! and rising.

When I come back to UK, later in the summer, I can't afford for my numbers to reduce any more!!

I feel really sluggish during humid days - have very little energy and could sleep all day! I find I'm better if I drink more water and have sugar free Popsicles x

Diagnosed prediabetic Easter 2014. Just left to get on with it, no guidance or help from GP. Every day I'm learning something new.

Hi all
I have type 2 since 2005 and just been put on insulin since April 2014. I am on 34 unit of insulin in the morning and on 24 unit in the evening. I have been off metformin all together now for over 7 weeks and every week I am told to increase my insulin of 2 unit morning and evening. My sugar levels remain between 12 to 13 am and 12 to 13 sometime higher in the evening. I have not been able to see any difference with the hot weather. I use novomix 30. My wife is insuring that I eat well and don't over do it in my carb intake. I am truly worried although my specialist nurse tells me not to worry too much about the levels as it takes a long time to settle. Nevertheless that this situation is somewhat worrying. I also have a liver function deficiency and await results from various tests. Can anyone tell me if the liver could have a bad influence on my sugar levels?
Thanks to let me know, Marcel
