In January this year I applied for my Psv licence back I was told that providing I had not had two hypos which needed someone else’s assistance and that I could pass my medical I should be ok,
As I have never needed any help after a hypo I paid my doctor £80.00 for a medical sent the paperwork to the Dvla and waited and waited and waited eventually I rang the Dvla and was told “o yes we are going to send to your own doctor for more information” 3 weeks later my doctor received a form from them asking very similar questions that he had answered on the original form when doing my medical, but he sent them in and two weeks later I rang Dvla to see how I was progressing, “It’s in a pile on my desk we are very busy you know” she said, I told her that I had an offer of a job driving at the Olympics and she said in that case I will take it in to my boss myself and tell him it’s a priority and that I had to ring back the next day, which I did but was told that they were sending a letter telling me I had to see a Consultant, I got the letter and made an appointment within two weeks but when he so my three months blood reading and noticed there was one or two lows ( the lowest being 2.6) in the early hours he said there might be a problem even though I can tell when my blood sugar is low it wakes me up and I have never ever needed anyone else’s assistance plus if I was going to drive I would check my blood anyway, so the consultant sent of the paper work and I waited three weeks before ringing Dvla again asking for my results as I had another job offer so she put me on the priority pile again, I got a letter yesterday I’m not getting my Psv plus I’ve been banned from driving altogether, what do I do without a car I have been driving for 37 years without a problem all over Europe I’m fitter now than I have ever been I go the gym 4 times a week, I could run a marathon, it’s going to the gym that has been giving me the low blood sugar I’m trying to adjust my insulin to account for my exercise, so to cut a long story short at the moment I’m up to my eyes in debt no chance of working I’m can’t look after my family, am seriously thinking about trying a little too much insulin and see if I mess that up as well.

Re: Any Diabetics wanting to get there Psv/Lgv licence back

Hi Mal, just read your post and I feel for you, you must be really really down right now but please please dont act on your last sentence that would only create more problems for those you love and would honestly solve nothing. Right now things must seem very bleak but is there a possibility of an appeal?

If not, driving is not the only way to earn a living and I realise that todays job market is tough but you sound a determined fella to me, there must be another way for you to find employment.

I wish I could offer you something more than my sympathy, something concrete that would solve all your money worries but I cant all I can do is tell you that there is always a way out of these situations no matter how bad things seem. You have to try to be optimistic, not easy I know but do please try, you know the old saying "one door closes and another opens" try to think positively, once you start looking for non driving work who knows would the future could hold.

Stay strong

Hi Mal,
have you been given a written explanation as to why your licence has been removed?
From what you have said there is no reason for them to do so. You have hypo awareness and have never needed any help.

So has the consultant ticked the wrong box by any chance and said you have no hypo awareness?

hello Mal

I also have the same opinion as CarbsRok and I am hoping that the mistake on refusing you the licence is maybe the consultant's fault... but I do have to ask why your consultant hasn't recommended that you change basal insulins and use Levemir instead of Lantus. Even if you have to inject Levemir twice per day, it's still a much better background insulin (lowers bg levels a bit more gently) than Lantus. If I was in your shoes I would be creating merry hell. Your consultant should know better

it's disgraceful... makes it worth having a second private meter for testing only when you feel weird so that any lows don't get logged on the good record. Just hope these medical staff realise just how much effect wanting tight control is going to have when people have to choose between running high to keep their driving licences or going for tight control and risking losing the driving licence, especially when they're now restricting test strips.

Re: Any Diabetics wanting to get there Psv/Lgv licence back

Earlier this year, i got the forms from the DVLA as i wanted my LGV back, as i own a couple of fire engines, which i can not drive at the moment.

Whilst i have nver had a blood test below 4, A week after getting the forms i was rushed into hospital with a suspected heart attack, and after that my control got worse, with a higher HBA1C.. So i did not complete the forms thinking they may refuse me because my control was not good enough..

From in the OP, if thats the whole story it does read that there has been an error as already stated, maybe the doctor checked the worng box saying your not hypo aware..

Read the recent thead: licence revoked: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes%2Dfo ... =1&t=32131

As this my offer some help.. and hope.

Re: Any Diabetics wanting to get there Psv/Lgv licence back

Well after a long 12 month fight involving Mp's, parliament, doctors & consultants I have just been told that my PSV & Car licence are in the post, I lost my PSV nearly 15yrs ago when I went on insulin and they took my car licence last year when I applied for my PSV back.
I still don’t know why insulin users lost their PSV/HGV licence automatically, some people say our government miss read diabetic guidelines from Brussels, so if anyone knows why I would be very interested to find out.
It just goes to show you should never give up, of course I’ve now got to sort out my drivers CPC then I’m off if I can find someone to take me on
:D
