Any suggestions for starting a low carb diet?

Went shopping today, didn't realize how hard it is to find foods low in carbs at my local tesco.

If you are looking for ready made meals that are low carb you will struggle, even basic stuff like cauliflower cheese has more carbs in it than if you made it yourself. Better of buying the ingredients.

What foods do you like?

I am not too fussy on foods, I could live on completely bland foods and it would'nt bother me. And yeah bluetit I do understand what you mean, I guess I was simply trying too hard when I was buynig stuff and was overlooking options. I'll adjust and broaden my scope, just gotta get used to all this. One positive thing about diabetes, at least for me, I have lost an incredible amount of weight. I was 24 stone 4 months ago, now I am 17 stone 5!

Well done you, @Zastro, learning the low carb way of eating is the aim for many of us, but over 6 stone weight loss in only 4 months sure is a terrific bonus. For myself, I'm not very interested in cooking or 'messing about' with food, plain and simple suits me fine. I've found a few staple things that I like and tend to mix and match with those so that it makes meals and meal planning as simple as possible. Plenty of advice on the options given here already, so no need for me to add to it, but just to wish you well with your low carb adventures :)

Have you lost this much weight without really trying to?

Yes, it's what convinced me to get myself tested for diabetes (father has so there was risk)

Someone's probably already mentioned this but it's worth saying anyway - has late onset Type 1 been ruled out?

That's a lot of weight to lose and sudden weight loss is a sign of Type 1, hence why I ask.

Well my GP has refered me to the local hospital's diabetes expert urgently so I will probably find out there

There was me thinking your weight loss was part of your overall plan and progress. :)
Please let us know how you get on at your hospital appt. Whatever type you are, there's plenty of support and info to be found here, if or when you need it.

Yes I have noticed, this seems a fantastic place to find out and ask things that could help me better control my diabetes :D

The doctor now has me on 160mg of Glic a day, sugar is hanging around the 10.1 to 10.8 mark

Yeah I am getting the impression, the more I read here, the less I feel a dietitian won't be any use and that I should be putting in the research myself. By the way, thank you for all the great advice!
True, go it by yourself. My dietician said I was killing myself! Must be doing it slowly as I have been on low carb for 18 months now and my bs levels have never been better.
