Anyone else on NovoMix30 and NovoRapid? How is your control, diet, routine etc? Thanks:)

Hi,
I'm looking to find out who is on the same insulin as me and how good your control is. I'd also appreciate diet info, routines and how long you have had Type 1 Diabetes if possible. I'm on 14 units NovoMix30 twice a day to cover breakfast and tea and NovoRapid for early morning/before waking spikes and corrections. I eat white bread toast in the mornings with lots of almond butter and my tea varies in carbs depending on what it is. If i can get my sugar around 6 - 7 when i wake after my correction dose the toast wont spike me bad and its quite predictable, any higher and i have to correct and/or go walking. There are also certain meals at tea time which are OK but others which spike my sugars and the same is needed in terms of corrections and exercise. I drink green tea with my meals which helps the spikes and take 2 - 3 120mg Magnesium Glycinate capsules daily and also at the moment take 1 800iu Vitamin D cap. I have had T1 diabetes for 15 years. I'm going to start working out carbohydrates so i know how much i need in order to not spike too high and eat the same amount daily rather than just guess. My control isn't ideal and i'm hoping to take some info from this thread to aid and better my routine. Thanks a bunch. Much love, John <3

I may also note that when i do any extra exercise (skateboard, dance around at a gig, spontaneous walking) i will do less insulin or eat carbs accordingly. If i go skating i wait 4 hours so my insulin peak has past and take extra carbs to keep me at around 9 - 10 or if skating after tea will do half the insulin. If i'm at a gig i usually wait till my Novomix30 is wearing off to dance around (nighttime dose - attend late drum and bass gigs, stay out till early morning sometimes) and if i go high ill correct to keep me from spiking excessively. Its all a game of trial and error really, i personally have bad reactions to hypoglycemia and that is the reason i tend to let my blood-sugars run a bit high at a gig and when skateboarding. Generally walking like going to shops etc i am not overdoing it so can try stay within normal(ish) range without worry.

You are on quite an unusual selection of insulins there! I'm surprised you aren't on a basal/bolus regime. Is there any reason why?

Tim, i believe the regime i'm on is because i have been on mixed insulin since childhood. I used to take Mixtard30 and actrapid but due to the stop in manufacturing i changed to NovoMix30 and NovoRapid. If i had been diagnosed in recent years i can imagine the norm would be the basal/bolus routine. Im OK staying on it id just like to learn how to better manage it. I'm very very anxious about switching insulins as i tried porcine insulin for a few days last year over concerns of my current insulin and it made me a nervous wreck, i couldn't handle the stress it put me under.

Hi. I really would ask to be changed to Basal/Bolus. Having a mixed insulin together with a rapid doesn't make too much sense. Basal/Bolus would still be only two insulins and would give you much more freedom and the carb-counting would have more of an effect. You talk about correction doses which is one result of the insulin types you are using. Levemir is the Basal NICE prefers and has very few problems and NovoRapid is one of the most popular rapids. Yes, do control the carbs which will always help reduce swings and how about changing white bread over to wholegrain?

That's interesting. The reason I'd suggest basal/bolus is your lifestyle. It would make managing it a lot easier as you would be able to eat whenever you liked!

yeah, strange combination of insulin.......

novomix 30 is a mixed insulin containing a slow and fast acting solution, which means you could take it two times a day..........

novorapid is a quick acting insulin on its own to be used at meal times........

so essentially you are getting two lots of quick acting mealtime insulin, which makes the dose much harder to get right and evaluate....

Thanks for the reply:) wholegrain i have tried and that for some reason spikes my bloodsugars worse. If i am exersising after doses i will have small amounts of wholegrain carbs to help keep me level but it doesnt do me too well having it at mealtimes.

It does sound good im just concerned that the way ive worked my life around my current insulin will change and i wont be able to do as i would now (skating and staying out late etc) i personally am not too fussed about eating whenever, it sometimes bugs me but im good at abstaining from eating when i cant and its not a massive issue in my life, if anything it helps me weight wise and i know im strong when i resist the urge to eat something when i shouldnt. im a healthy weight and physically am very fit. I just worry about hypos way way more than i used to, i used to have hypos daily when skateboarding but just deal with it willy nilly, now ill do anything to avoid having them because theyve became a lot more unpleasant and i also have hypo unawareness. I check my blood sugars over 30 times a day (excessive but it helps me relax when i know how my blood sugars are acting - doing the opposite at the same time checking so much but thats something im working towards and im hoping for CGM soon) i think my main goal is to just understand everything im eating, i avoid all sorts of chemicals and take supplements, its just me being a little too blahsay at the minute. thankyou for your advice:)
