I Just recently had another blood checkup.. again they mentioned my elevated cholesterol but then also told me I was Low Foli.

And have put me on 5mg Folic Acid tablets a day, has anyone else had to take these ? and is 5mg not a bit on the high side ?

Seem's the diet works great for my Diabetes but continues to bring more problems with it any suggestions ? Been eating leafy greens with every meal but this doesn't seem to be enough.

Thanks.

I have, pre-dating diabetes, have ongoing issues with low folic acid. Treatment should be 5mg for 3 months but my GP skimps and gives me 1 or 2 months.
3 months because you need to make all new red blood cells to replace the damaged ones.

Hi fendertele, I am also T2D and also have low folic acid, have had for years. My doctors also put me on 5mg daily which I took for years 3 months at a time. Sadly I have had to stop them but for most people that dose works well and you should see results at next blood tests.

Fendertele - have you had your thyroid checked recently. Folks with hypothyroidism (which is really rather common) often have low folate and ferritin. Just a thought.

Hi Valaan so did you take for 3 months then get tested and if back to normal levels would come off them then only go back on if the levels dropped again ?

What were the symptoms that you had prior to finding this out ?.

Hi I haven't been told anything other than you are low foli... heres the tabs and take for 2 months then get tested again.

What are the symptoms of low Foli and is it dangerous if left untreated ?.

Yes, they would put me on them for 3 months, test see they had lifted and stop them and repeat, for me the would never hold so was like a yo-yo.
I personally didn't have any symptoms for low folic acid, it was simply by testing that I knew.

I am told that I am unusual that I can't hold my folic levels, so now they just make sure they don't go too low. No idea what they will do if they do go too low, but it's a good reason to eat the odd square of dark chocolate ;)

Hi .I am new here.
I was given folic acid as I was told I had low iron was given tablets and left to get on with it. The same as you are diabetic too take Metformin. Been left to my own devices. Got a blood glucose meter free after signing up to spirit healthcare who deliver my medication. Still having to pay for needles and testing sticks cause Dr doesn't think I need to test my blood. But I said I needed to to see what food affected my blood and gave me any symptoms if blood was low or high . any help or advise would be great

Non-diabetic hubby was told low folic acid, so he put himself on tablets, but they are showing 400mu. How does this compare to the 5 mg mentioned in this thread?

HI Missy64 and welcome to the forums. Would you like me (or another moderator) to put this post in its own thread in the T2 forum so that you can get advice for your own issues?

Similar story with my own GP and as others told me at the time, they like to tell you that you don't need to check daily as this means they don't need to supply you with the equipment needed... instead they tell you the routine checks can tell them if the changes are working or not... from test to test.

I ended up just buying a gluco monitor and strips... I'll be honest I dont change the needle as it remains sharp and only i'm using it... have been using the same one for over a year, I do order the strips once every few months as I tend to only use 2/3 a day and get them in 50s.

The term "big boned" lol repeatedly told this growing up!
I know this is a week or so old this thread but I have read up on low b6 and I think I have classic signs. Cracked corners of my mouth which flare up now and again, skin rashes , dry skin on my face, moody (not normally like it although I do suffer from depression). I am so tired, normally have about 9 hrs of sleep and I am out like a light but still tired, my hair is so thin and lank I normally have extremely curly and full of life hair. I also keep dropping things - clumsy if you know what I mean. I have no pain anywhere so I don't think its nerve damage but I am convinced its something. Anyone else felt like this I am wondering if I am low on vitamin b6. Do I just ask for a blood test or what? Never felt like this before I went lchf just noticed it more this last few weeks.
