Apixaban effect on Diabetic retinopathy

That's what I would do @woody65, the Ophthalmologists are the best people to advise and provide the information that your looking for.

Anticoagulants
In general, the use of warfarin or coumadin within the therapeutic range has not been associated with adverse visual outcomes. The risk of retinal and/or vitreous hemorrhage is minimal and should not deter physicians from prescribing anticoagulants, when medically indicated, to patients with coincident diabetes-related eye disease.[106] However, patients with diabetes mellitus are more likely than the general population to develop cataracts and diabetic retinal complications that require surgery or intraocular injections. In these patients, the continued use of anticoagulation agents while undergoing intraocular procedures, such as cataract extraction,[107,108] vitrectomy[109,110] and intraocular injections,[111] has been shown to be associated with increased bleeding. Such bleeding is not always clinically detrimental and therefore not an absolute contraindication to surgery nor an absolute indication to discontinue coumadin.
Although Apixaban works slightly differently to warfarin, they both inhibit the clotting "cascade" so the overall effects should be similar.

Contacted my Consultant and he has told me that it is OK to take this particular tablet. I was a little doubtful about the medicine as earlier in the year I had to have emergency panretinal lazer treatment. So all is well [I hope] thank you for your replies and the information provided, sorry about being a little slow to reply, Consulatant has been away for a few days.

Hi, I have been on Warfarin (which is like some statins and is a vit k antagonist and causes artery calcification). I have also taken Apixaban and Rivaroxaban that are cleared through the liver, I do
blame taking statins for a cataract. I had to come off Apixaban and Rivaroxaban because they caused stomach upsets but my eyesight was fine. I am now taking Dabigatran which is cleared through the kidneys but I've just started taking it. If you have to take an anticoagulant for say Afib one does not have a lot of choice. Derek

Derek, thanks for that, possibly like yourself you end up taking so many tablets its difficult to pin down which ones are causing any prolems. So I shall certainly be aware of the possibility of stomach upsets. Ultimately though I suppose like many people the alternative to not taking any, is quite alarming lol

Hi Woody, Another thing I should have mentioned is that Rivaroxaban has a bad reputation on Mr Google for liver damage. Also an antidote for Apixaban is in the pipeline. The novel anticoagulants do not have an antidote other than a blood transfusion. Warfarin can be counted by lots of vit k but it would be too slow, I would think, if one was in car accident! I tend to drive very carefully now to avoid the idiots. I was on 12mgs of warfarin per day and they couldn't get my inr above 1.6! It and statins put my GGT over 100.
