I have found advice on diet for kidney damage very confusing. Before operating for kidney stones, my urologist referred me to a nephrologist to assess CKD. He said I had some mild disfunction, but should continue on my low carb regime for diabetes, which meant high protein.
However, my kidney function has deteriorated, but so has my BG control, so I'm left trying to meet conflicting demands. My BG shoots up after plant proteins, like lentils and beans. Grains are a no-no, apart from occasional tiny portions.
I am continuing with the regime that worked for my diabetes previously. Eggs and dairy, some fish, occasional meat, low carb veggies and some fruit and nuts. Also limiting oxylates, but make an exception for dark chocolate. I still have kidney stones, which cannot be accessed for removal, which complicates things.
My understanding is low animal protein is recommended for Stage 2b to 4 CKD, but high protein if on dialysis.
