I don't use them myself (yet), but socks for diabetics usually have extra smooth seams around the toe areas to prevent rubbing and reduce the risk of blisters etc.
All the specialist ones I've seen have a ridged toe seam. I've found Pringle and Elle ladies socks in TK Max that have a nice loose top and no toe seam.
I use them for comfort and not because I need them.
