Such a shame reading the following as I always wanted to give blood and help save lives but having type 1 has prevented this, just hope those you can give blood step forward to help out.

I'm already booked in for the 29th December...

If you ARE able to be a blood donor, please do it.

Even though over 90% of the adult population are eligible to give blood, only 4% actually do. That's 1.6 million donors out of a total of 40 million. Not alot, is it?

If you are interested, and want to find out more, please visit their web-site at www.blood.org.uk

Thanks for reading,
K

My son is a fit, healthy young man and has regularly given blood for a few years. At the moment he is living in Switzerland and tried to give blood there, however he was turned away because he lived in UK between certain dates. I think it was 1990 -96. He was told there was a risk anyone living in UK during that time could have CJD and therefore they did not want his blood. Hopefully he'll be flying home for Xmas and so will try to give blood then, I see the blood transfusion service have sent him a letter recently so they are obviously 'after him'!
In Switzerland they give all donors a meal and a raffle ticket! They still gave him this because he had offered.

Yes,same for me living in France. As a T1 on insulin no problem (the risk is to me not from my blood). As someone who has lived in the Uk , no way!

Whole-wheat past and rice, tastes horrible. Cats, spiders, and people who think nick jonas is a musician.
For all you type 1's ou there, please sign the organ donor list !

Although our blood is unsuitable, a lot of our organs are just fine. Organs are so variable, type 1 isn't an immediate no no.... which is great.

Well worth of a mention Celtic, but I am sure there are exclusions for type 1's depending upon previous history and control etc, round about the time that CJD was in the news I am sure there was a ban on patients who used beef insulin for treating their diabetes, not sure if that is still the case or that it was indeed factual account at that time.

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
This should be of some help regarding Organ Donation........from the Q&A section......

19. Can I be a donor if I have an existing medical condition?

Yes, in most circumstances. Having a medical condition does not necessarily prevent a person from becoming an organ or tissue donor. The decision about whether some or all organs or tissue are suitable for transplant is made by a healthcare professional, taking into account your medical history.

There are only two conditions where organ donation is ruled out completely. A person cannot become an organ or tissue donor if they have been diagnosed with HIV or have, or are suspected of having, CJD.

20. Can I be a donor if I have been turned down to donate blood?

Yes. The decision about whether some or all organs or tissue are suitable for transplant is always made by a specialist, taking into account your medical history. There may be specific reasons why it has not been possible to donate blood, such as having had a blood transfusion or having had hepatitis in the past. Or there may be reasons why you could not give blood because of your health at the time – sometimes a simple thing like a cold or medication that you are taking can prevent you from donating blood.

You can read more and register online here........

Thanks Ken, no mention of what I said about CJD so do wonder if this was just another scare story circulating around this time! :?

I was a blood doner on a regular basis when I was a teenager. I remember picking up cards to give to others to encourage them to give blood. Gave out quite a few to my work mates. I recall one chap there volunteering his blood only to be turned down as he had previously had TB. He was totally devastated when he was told he could'nt give his blood.

BUT, a few days later he received a letter from the Blood Doning people asking him if he would like to give his blood for research purposes.

He was totally overjoyed at this.

Just wondering if this means diabetics can still give blood for research purposes rather than for transferring to other people?

Well worth enquiring?

I think the best people to contact is The Medical Research Council. See if there is ongoing research which requires blood from Diabetics...........
