Are my diabetes team accountable to anyone?

I'm finding it difficult to get what I need from my hospital diabetes team. Without going into detail about the specific issues, I'd like to know if they're accountable to anyone. Are there standards of care I should be able to expect, and is there anything I can do if those standards aren't met?

Hi Jeanpaul :)

Yes they are accountable. Their job description must be adhered to and their contract of employment will give all the necessary details.

There are proper NHS procedures if you would like to make a complaint.

However if you are not happy it would be best to tell your doctor. The GP will give you plenty of help regarding your issues and will ensure your concerns get through to the correct Dept; in that hospital.

After recent issues regarding NHS, small concerns like yours may not get brushed under the carpet in future.

Roy. :)

Hi jeanpaul. If you have not been getting proper diabetes care it would be really helpful if you could answer the questions on the thread 'Chance for YOU to help end the diabetes care postcode lotter[y]' so DUK can chase up as well.

If you are unhappy with any aspect of care in any UK hospital you can contact The Patient Advisory & Liaison Service (PALS), their details should be available on the hospitals web site or from the hospitals reception, every hospital and GP has this facility but if your problem is with a hospital department then your GP would not be the appropriate place to complain, go direct to the hospitals PALS team.

Alternatively go straight to the top and write to the hospitals chief executive, I bet that will get things moving

Hi. Specifically for diabetes, the NICE Diabetes Pathways doc on the web is one good guide that docs are supposed to follow. DUK also have a 15 point check-list to what you should expect
