I am type 2 diabetic and want to know is: are statins really bad for diabetics?

Asked by Elaine on Facebook during the 7pm-8pm live chat with Dr Hilary Jones.

If you like grapefruit, you should speak to your doctor as people taking certain statins should not consume grapefruit. The interaction between statins and grapefruit could also increase the effect of statins leading to a greater likelihood of experiencing side effects.

Reads like the small print you get on a home or car insurance form, gobbledegook,

Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs that are frequently used as part of diabetes care due to the knowledge that people with diabetes face a greater likelihood of heart attack and stroke. If you like grapefruit, you should speak to your doctor as people taking certain statins should not consume grapefruit. The interaction between statins and grapefruit could also increase the effect of
statins leading to a greater likelihood of experiencing side effects. A statin is one part of diabetes care and shouldn’t be used in place of maintaining a good diet, taking regular exercise, quitting smoking and cutting down on alcohol.
pS,

Well that is a much better answer, why on earth weren't we told the full reply here in the first place?

I don't understand that either - isn't it libel / slander or something? At best it's misleading.

Perhaps a mistake in the "cut & paste" of the post creation?

Feels a bit like I would imagine it feels to read a 'daily rag' with there sensationalist headlines.

pS,

A more comprehensive answer, perhaps the full text should have been given in Dr H's reply on the forum.
