What a day! Yesterday almost 150 children with type 1 diabetes came to West Ham United Boleyn Ground and were coached in soccer skills by Youth Academy coachs... on the first-team pitch! The kids got a free umbro shirt and gift bag courtesy of sponsors Bayer Diabetes Care and Diabetes.co.uk. It was an awesome day and everyone went home with a smile on their face.

This was the pre-match press release: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-even ... s-day.html

Hi Dan,
What a brilliant scheme - and I bet the kids were thrilled skinny (apologies Fergus).

Many football clubs look for ways to help in their communities (as well as building their profiles locally it is also seen by many as a useful team-building and bonding exercise for the players). So, as one of the sponsors, perhaps Diabetes.co.uk should contact all 92 league and premiersip clubs and see if they would be prepared to run something similar for diabetic kids in their localities. Who knows, maybe one of them will discover another Gary Mabbutt (former captain of Spurs and England - and a type-1).

Dennis, that's a really good idea. I don't think we'd have the budget to sponsor more than a couple of these events a year, but a really worthwhile plan to let the clubs know. I was interested to see a couple of the kids were really handy on the pitch.
