Aspartame

It is a pity that Synsepalum berries were somehow classified as a food additive in America - they alter how the taste of things is perceived, making things as sour as lemons seem sweet, so that the freeze dried fruit would have been an ideal way to remove the need for sugar.

Aspartame is used because of the cost ... the least expensive artificial sweetener. Pepsi in the US had voluntarily stopped using Aspartame because of public pressure and before the lobbyists managed to get the gov't to ban it and they switched to another sweetener (sucralose) and I was waiting for them to do the same here in Canada, but they soon switched back to Aspartame - again because of cost and, believe it or not, Diet Pepsi drinkers didn't like the taste switch and wanted the old Diet Pepsi back! As well mentioned, don't trust the corporate giants to do the right thing for the consumer if it is going to cost more money. Even half a cent a bottle adds up with millions of bottles being sold. Pepsi wouldn't wait for the health-conscious consumer to eventually pick up lagging sales again. The shareholders wanted sales to perk back up instead of waiting. It is fairly well explained in this Fox News article.

If you want to be more confused read this 2015 article about Sucralose and Aspartame.

I gave up drinking Pepsi Max & Coke Zero (1 or 2 glasses almost daily) about 3 years ago as I started getting aching pains in my elbows and knees. Since I stopped drinking them, the pains have gone away. I only now have a very occasional one as a mixer with no problem. Equal in tea or coffee once or twice a day also seems to be OK.

My joints got so painful I could barely walk to work, knees, hips. Then I twigged we had moved across road from Lidl and I was drinking 2l of x cola a day. Stopped 2 weeks later pain gone. Never touch the stuff again it was very frightening.

I don't use artificial sweeteners if I can help it because of the aftertaste.

Aspartame especially leaves a weird taste in my mouth.

So possibly dodged a bullet there.
