Aspirin - Good or Bad for Type 1 Diabetes?

Hi All,

Ive recently started taking half and aspirin each day, do you feel this is good practice? I have no real reason to take other than always feeling a little lousy and trying anything to feel better?

Unless told to by your Dr I wouldn't be taking aspirin, it can in the long-term cause stomach problems so always check first. Better to ask your gp for some checks to find the cause of your symptoms IMHO.
 
A gp I used to see always asked if I was taking aspirin and thought it was strange that I wasn't.
I didn't start taking it though as I wasn't sure it would produce any benefits.
Have you found things have improved since you've been taking it and in what sense?

Thanks guys,

I've seen numerous gps and specialists about my symptoms but they can't answer, just run tests and come back clear....

I've only recently (past few days) took half a 75mg aspirin and have yet to feel any benefits!

I take aspirin, prescribed, as it helps to keep my blood thinner and less likely to (hopefully) cause stroke /heart attack if a clot hits a narrower than usual artery.
If I had a choice I would leave it off the daily menu.



Late onset T1, several auto immune issues.
Humalogmix25 twice a day, Methotrexate 25mg once per week, FolicAcid 5mg once per week, prednisolone 5mg daily, Allopurinol 300mg, Calcichew-D3 800iu, Levothyroxine 50mcg, Atenolol 50mg, Losarten 100mg, Aspirin 75mg, Nicorandil 20mg, Nitrolingual GTN spray, Metformin 2000mg, Allimemazine 10mg, Lanzoprazole 30mg, Atorvastatin 20mg, Co Codamol 8/500mg, Depo Medrone (Methylprednisolone) or double Prednisolone for 7 days in case of RA flare.

Same here
 
I was put on aspirin as 'all diabetics should take aspirin'. Took it for a number of years. Developed stomach problems - told it was probably gastroparesis. Lost 3 stone with it. Was devastated. Turned out it was a f@&@@ing stomach ulcer caused by the aspirin.
Stopped taking it!

Was prescribed 75mg of soluble aspirin (came as a powder) by the diabetologist when diagnosed 9 years ago but she asked the cardiologist if I should continue to take it, he said no so haven't had it since.
 
One day about 10 years ago my Dr sent me a letter with a prescription for Simvastatin and aspirin, saying something along the lines of "We give these to all diabetics over 45".
 
Must have been a quiet period with no clients and nothing to do.

Obviously had the statin mentioned before but not aspirin Robert.

I was told to take aspirin when they thought I had angina 3 years ago, however once I was given the all clear they told me to stop.
 
I'm sure I was told diabetics shouldn't take aspirin? It was a long time ago though!

Cheers Rob, it was a condition called Costochondritis and unrelated to the heart, it cleared up after taking Anti-inflammatory for several weeks.
 
Any asthmatics would be advised to avoid aspirin without consulting their GP first. I'm allergic to aspririn and I only discovered this after it caused the worst asthma attack I've ever had.
 
There's evidence that a mini aspirin each day reduces cardiovascular disease risk, and of course diabetics (as a population) have an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. I've taken it and I do take it whenever I see cheap aspirin. The mini aspirins are exorbitant so I get normal aspirins and break them approximately into quarters.

What's this about aspirin being contra indicated for diabetics though?

Both my parents in their late 70's dadT2 on insulin with a Hb1ac of 5.9 and my mum no diabetes but on meds for blood pressure had letters from their GP (same GP as myself) a couple of months back to tell them to stop taking the daily aspirin they had been prescribed a few years back

Apparently they are taking everyone who is on daily aspirin off it unless they have already had a heart attack or stroke, they said it had no preventative value at all to anyone who hadn't suffered an attack or stroke and could even be more harmful to their health than taking it?
