ASPIRIN Use For Diabetics Is Questioned.

Aspirin should not routinely be used to prevent heart attacks in people with diabetes, Scottish research suggests. The British Medical Journal reported that in 1,300 adults with no symptoms of heart disease the drug, which can cause stomach bleeds, had no benefit.

The findings contradict many guidelines which advocate people with diabetes use aspirin to counter the underlying high risk of heart attack and stroke. Patients with concerns are advised to consult their GP before changing medication.

In people who have already had a heart attack or stroke, or have been diagnosed with coronary artery disease, aspirin has been shown to reduce the risk of future "events" by around 25%. Patients shouldn't panic or stop taking aspirin

However, in recent years doctors have begun to focus on people who have not yet developed so-called cardiovascular disease, but are at high-risk of having it in the future - such as people with diabetes.

There are around two million people over 40 with diabetes in the UK.
Around 80% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease including strokes and heart attacks.

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
I now feel vindicated in not taking aspirin when my doctor tried to get me to take it!

Again, 20% of diabetics don't die of Cardio-Vascular disease. :D This figure can doubtless be significantly reduced by regular exercise; I just find it difficult to get outside in all weathers and actually do the exercise I need. Now, if I could afford to go to the Gym two or three times a week (which I enjoy), I would be much more fit and probably save the Government and the NHS hundreds of thousands of £s in my lifetime. I might then be fit enough to work in a proper job, save the Government benefits and start paying Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions again. :)

Dear Government, PLEASE could diabetics have FREE access to gymnasiums and swimming pools?
:D

I was put on Aspirin when I contracted PERICARDITIS (an infection of the outer "skin" of the heart). I suffered stomach inflation (bleeding) and was taken off it again; this also happened when I was put on Metformin. :x

I've recently stopped taking aspirin because of retinopathy risks causing leaky blood vessels. I believe aspirin has caused these leaks. Having stopped and after a visit today to the eye clinic, my eyes have stabilised.

Take what you will from that. Its not a wonder drug in my eyes.

Matty ,you must discuss this with your doctor before making that sort of decision !!Doctors prescribe medication for a reason and to just stop taking it may be detrimental to your health.

Hi All.
I can't take Asprin makes me feel unwell. My gp put me on Clopidogrel instead. Check it out.
Regards, Bernard.
