AT A LOSS WHAT TO HAVE FOR BREAKFAST

chavs !!
Hi all, type 2 for 10 years and can still not fathom out what best to eat, tested this morning and was 7.1 which is normal for me, had 2 weetabix and semi skim milk and 2 hours later my reading is 16.7 and I am starving, any ideas why this has happened as thought weetabix is good for you, would toast and a banana be best and if so what bread is best, normally have a atkins decadence bar for breakfast which works fine for me but too expensive :problem:

There are not many of us type 2's who can even go into the same room as bread even if it is toasted so that's not such a good idea. Weetabix may be good for you but only relatively so and some people can't eat it.

What about bacon and eggs? Providing you buy expensive sausages (without flour for bulk) you could have omlette, sausage and bacon. One of those Mattesons smoked pork sausages might well last you for several breakfasts.

I like eggs but can they cause high cholesterol as I have to watch mine at the moment ?

Just one egg probably wouldn't. I find that the requirements of diabetes and those of cholesterol are often at odds with each other. I worry less about the cholesterol than I do about the diabetes since seeing a WHO graph showing that more people die with low cholesterol than high.

Anyway I like the idea of having a choice what to die of.

Eggs have been proven not to raise cholesterol, so go ahead and eat them. I'm sure someone else will post a link to some information about this.

Check this but I think the cholesterol from eggs was found to have little effect as it is not absorbed. The ideas about cholesterol in diet changed a while ago. Fried eggs are bad due to the fat though.
That might have come from the egg marketing board so decide for yourself.
And cholesterol is meant to be more of a concern than BG for diabetics (not sure about that).

I have bacon and poached eggs for breakfast and it hardly affects BG at all. Often instead of bacon I will have kippers or mackeral so you could try that.
All very easy to make.
I have an egg poacher - a pan with water and little cups for the eggs - takes 4 minutes and very little mess.

Oh - and a spring onion - I've taken to having spring onions with almost everything.

You could also try cooked chicken bits from the supermarkets. (avoid kievs at all costs) Corned beef is very low in carbs so now you could try chicken salad or a corned beef salad.

If anything needs cooking do it the night before so breakfast is not delayed.

Disagree about fried eggs. I use glorious butter or wonderful coconut oil. Both friendly fats.
Work days I scramble. 2 eggs at 45 secs on high in microwave and stirred well when done makes for creamy results. Done whilst coffee is gurgling through the machine.
Cd

Bread made with flour is possible but you have to make it yourself and put about 1.5 oz. of lard in a mix for a loaf. This lowers the GI enough for one slice to be safe. When I did the tests I ate two slices ladled with real butter and got results (from memory) of 5.2 before and 8.5 two hours after and 6.*something 3 hours after.

One slice would have been ok I suppose from that.

Was at a bit of a loss last week as my first attempt at a 'healthy' breakfast ( Good muesli, greek low fat yoghurt, blueberries and half a banana) made my fasting level of 7 rocket up to 18.2.

Next day had exactly the same without the banana and BG rose to 10.6.

So the culprit was the banana.

Also don't forget the spoonful of sugar in your tea. That makes a difference too.
Either go for Candarel or Stevia instead.

Or if you are like me and can't stand the taste of any sugar substitutes go for water instead.

Fizzy mineral water straight from the fridge with fresh lemon and lime.

It is really lovely and very refreshing.

I now drink water all day and have even given up that first cuppa in the morning. For me that is utterly amazing.
And I don't drink coffee either...

Have substituted my much loved Tesco Portugese Rose with dry white wine. Half wine half water. I am trying to get used to it but it is hard. But I have halved my wine intake.

2 weeks in and I don't feel any different but I could have lost a bit of weight. Need some scales....

I only drink black tea with splenda and water through the day, I am teetotal and don't smoke so feel as I don't have any enjoyment in life to which my doctor replied oh there are lovely fruit and veg out there  , I have a banana and never test afterwards as I usually do an hour exercise afterwards but think I may test after eating one, didn't know these can cause spikes, jeez 10 years of being diabetic and still feel like a novice :(

Full fat greek yogurt with berries, they do frozen ones in the supermarket. But berries are coming into season now. have some almonds on it too, quite filling.

I've been struggling with this since I was diagnosed with T2 a few weeks ago.

This week I have been having some success with wholegrain rye bread (Schneider Brot German vollkornbrot from Waitrose) and Almond Butter (Meridian crunchy almond butter from my local health food shop). One slice of bread and 12g of butter seems to be a reasonable ratio, is 175kCal, and doesn't seem to spike my BG.

I can't say it is as much fun as a full English, but I think those days are past for me!

Sent from my brain.

I have almost a full English most days, minus the beans, but I have mushrooms and occasionally of a weekend fry half a slice of burgen.

Excuse my noob ignorance, but I haven't come across burgan before- do you just treat it as a bread substitute? Thanks!

burgen is a type of bread that you can get from most supermarkets, it is seeded and comes in a couple of varieties, I have the linseed one :)

As others have said have egg and bacon. I do have a small portion of home-made muesli with nuts etc as well sometimes. Weetabix is almost pure carb so probably best to keep it to one not two. Also as others have said eggs contain cholesterol but don't make the body create cholesterol in the liver; there is great confusion on the subject of cholesterol but it's blood sugar that I believe really matters for us.
