At Last!!

Talking positively about Daily Fail articles seems to be becoming a worryingly regular occurrence recently. What's going on! I think we should be told! Quite a good article I thought.

This was in the Daily Fail this morning;

The more we find out about hidden sugars the better!

Yes! Eating less hidden sugar will leave more room for healthy foods like bread, pasta, potato and rice.

I agree that there is some good info buried in the article, but the focus of sugar is just confusing and completely misses the point that a nice healthy slice of bread will turn into sugar in your blood even more easily than actual sugar in your food.

I do wonder whether including the amount of sugar on nutritional labels serves any purpose at all, apart from confusing newly diagnosed diabetics. It's not even a good proxy for glycemic index. After all, if we, as diabetics, are not interested in the sugar content of food, then who is? Robert Lustig maybe...

Our SDN will be chuffed to bits!

I know it's not the best article, but it is the Fail after all. I completely agree with you - getting tired of the weird looks I get when I attempt to explain that all these 'healthy' things, such as bread, spuds and pasta, turn into glucose fast. My mother in particular is convinced I'm trying to kill MH and myself by low carbing.

Only chuffed to bits Julia I've just seen mine dancing in the street

Good point well made Stephen.

That bottle of flavoured volvic surprised me because I occasionally drink it but a check shows how manufacturers tailor their product to the individual market.
Volvic touch of fruit lemon and lime UK 5.5 g carb per 100ml
Here:
Volvic citron-citron vert 0.6 g carb per 100g

normal coke has 10.7g carb per hundred. The article is a bit unfair to compare 500ml with 1500ml.

The article is just covering old ground and what it is saying comes as no surprise, that said there's no harm in reiterating the warning to get the message home to those who have missed it or completely forgot :)

I am with you here Phoenix. I used to buy gallons of Volvic with a touch of strawberry, and had no idea how much sugar I was consuming. Now I only buy plain bottled water and add a little no added sugar squash which is no sugar, few calories and no carbs.

I've been having a lot of problems drinking enough water, but a tiny splash of no sugar lemon squash really helps. I use less than a teaspoon in a pint of water.

Also, if you have any citrus fruits, slice them up quite thinly, spread them on a baking sheet and freeze. When frozen pop them in a bag or tub and keep in the ice box. Add a few slices to your glass of water when you want chilled flavoured water. I shove them in Pimms in the summer.....but need to find something other than lemonade to make my summer Pimms with now.

I can't drink plain water either. I add a splash of Sainsburys double concentrate no added sugar squash. just the ticket. Low cal lemonade should be fine opposed to regular lemonade.
