August Whole 30 Paleo Challenge

Good luck Stephen, it's not an easy challenge you have set yourself, but I don't have a doubt you will do it.

Can't stand soda, but can't live without the cream.

I am Paleo except for cheese, cream and Greek yogurt,

Is that a bit like saying "I'm vegetarian apart from steak, chops and chicken curry"?
Only asking, only asking....................

Thank you Joanna, what a naughty young ram he is.

So I'm a third of the way through, and still on the wagon.

Not even a tiny slip, which I'm especially proud of having spent 4 days at the Olympics last week surrounded by tempting ice-creams and fizzy drinks.

I'm not sure that I feel any healthier (although remember, I was doing most of it anyway), but I've learned a lot about processed foods. Almost all of the snack foods that I used to rely on contain hidden junk like "sugar", "dextrose", "wheat starch" and "tapioca starch", which means that I can't indulge in things like sliced meats, or shop bought egg-mayo.

Not allowed to weigh myself until the end of the month, but I'll be disappointed if I haven't lost a heap of weight.

20 days to go.

I missed this..**** man, sales of the squirty stuff must have tumbled dramatically!

I couldn't do it and a little part of me thinks you are mad. The vast majority of me admires the way you have kicked, stomped and squirted your diabetes into submission so far, also that you are continually seeking more info about it. Knowledge is power and you are continually demonstrating that.

I will wish you good luck not that you will need it.

Thanks ladybird!

Mrs Borofergie thinks I'm mad too. Especially when she brings home things for me to eat and I turn my nose up at them, because of a small bit of injected tapioca starch in the small print at the end of the ingredients.

Our trip to the supermarket today was utterly depressing, having to walk past most of my "low-carb staples" (cream, and jelly, packaged meats and a low-carb protein bar or two). Reminded me of my first trips to the supermarket as a newly diagnosed diabetic.

Not sure if it's going to help my diabetes or not, but every pound I shed in the next five weeks is going pay me back double at the Great North Run in 5 weeks.

How's this going Stephen ? I think we should be told ... :)

It's going very well. Only 6 days left but (depending on what the scales say at the end), I might continue it at least until the September 16th (when I'm going to drink at least 2 buckets of diet coke as my reward for finishing the Great North Run).

The truth is, that it isn't very difficult. In some ways it's a bit easier than my <25g regular diet, because I can eat some fruit.

I've replaced my Coke addiction with a fizzy water addiction (which is great - I glug down 3 litres on San Peligrino every day at work).

I've also been eating a few more carbs, berries, an apple or two and sweet potato, to help fuel my running in the without cream. None of this has had any impact on my BG (but then I'm also running 20 miles a week, and my muscles are probably sucking up every ounce of glucose they can get their hands on).

I'm hoping that I've lost some weight. You're not supposed to weigh yourself until the end of the Whole 30, so I can't tell for sure, but I think that I'm looking significantly less fat.

I'll weigh myself on the 28th because I'm off to America after that, and I won't have easy access to scales.

I recommend it.

So I'm off to America at 5am tomorrow morning, so I did my Whole30 weigh-in today instead.

Starting weight 255lbs - finishing weight 245lbs (although I still have 2 whole days to go). I look and feel significantly less fat than 27 days ago, but it's nice to see it confirmed on the scales. I'm very pleased.

I've run 63 miles during that time (which is 10,000kcal or about 3lbs). I reckon the rest is down to cutting the cream from my diet. Maybe Diet Coke too. It's also very, very, difficult to snack, when almost everything has starch and sugar in it (apart from home cooked meat, veg and eggs).

I'm going to stick with it for another 3 weeks until after the Great North Run, as I'd like to line up at 240lbs which would be 70lbs weight loss in total. However, I'm going to reward as soon as I finish, by finding the nearest MacDonalds, and drinkng two bucket-size Diet Cokes.

I'm as near palo as Waitrose Essentials allows

Impressed is not the word. I didn't doubt for a second you would do it, so the biggest well done from me. How are things now, are you still doing the diet?

Yes. All done. It was tough last week in Detroit, because the food provided for our meeting was breakfast = sandwiches, lunch = sandwiches, dinner = pizza (for Wednesday only - I scoffed a massive steak or ribs every other night). Didn't fall off the waggon once though.

I ate some cheese on the flight home yesterday - out of calorific necessity, and Mrs Borofergie is talking about making aubergine lasagna tomorrow (with cheese). But other than that, I intend to stay on it for at least another 2 weeks until the Great North Run. Might stay on it permanently.

Why permanently? Will it benefit your diabetes, your fitness or both? If there is no real benefit to doing it for ever more, will you not miss the squirty stuff and buckle  Aubergine lasagne sounds wonderful, I say "in the name of science" have an extra large serving  I'm sure Mrs Stephen will be delighted to see her cooking enjoyed that much (I know I do) :D

Well I think that it's a healthy way of eating. The only difference between Whole30 and my regular diet is no dairy and no sweetners. It's good at highlighting your food dependencies (cream and diet coke in my case).

It probably isn't as good for my diabetes as ketosis in the short term. But losing more weight quicker will probably have long term benefits. I'm also in the late stages of half-marathon training, so I can get by with a few more carbs than before.

When I've done the first half-marathon in 2 weeks, I'm probably going to try and go back into ketosis, in time for my second half-marathon at the end of October. But I'll try and do it without cream this time.

Best of luck to you in the half marathon. It's something I could never do.
