Australian Twisties (UK's Nic-Naks)

Dear All,

Whilst on a recent trip to Australia, I have taken a strong liking to a local savoury snack called Twisties (equivalent to our Nick-Naks) and I have consumed a large packet (100g) and my sugar level has risen to slightly over 8mmoI/L. I know the salt content is pretty high for us T1's.

I am wondering what are your thoughts on this issue :?:

Not surprised your Bg levels went up.....Twisties contain 64.5g carbs per 100g bag.
The Sodium/Salt content is 1.06g. High for anybody.
NiK Nak's however contain anything from 49.6g - 53.7g per 100g.

Not exactly 'snacks', more like meals.

My GL is around 4.8 to 6 mmoI/L before I consume a 100g packet.
OK first thing, it's one or the other, not "around". This is significant because you can't hope to dose insulin correctly without knowing your exact starting point. Secondly as totsy asked, did you inject and if so how much? What is your normal insulin/carb ratio? What time of day did you eat the snack, and was it after any other food or on it's own? Lots of questions I know, but all relevant to determine the correct dose of insulin for YOU.

Personally I reckon a temporary blip to 8 is probably nothing to get too excited about, provided it goes back to below 6 fairly soon after. Non-diabetics can theoretically spike to this level with no (discernible) after effect. You might want to worry more about the high salt content as cugila suggests!

Dear kegstore & totsy,

I have 12 units of Mixtard 30mg two times a day 30 mins prior to breakfast & supper meals and I do my GL testing straight after which gives me 4.8 to 5 mmoI/L readings after my injection administrations :| .

Are you using a meter to get your Bg readings, I am puzzled as to why they seem so vague ? (4.8 to 5 mmol/l) How long after your meals are you actually testing ? you say, straight after.....??? :?

Dear cugila,

I am using a GL meter supplied to me by my Diabetic Nurse at my local GP practice clinic and the brand name is "LIFESCAN One Touch Ultra 2" and this meter has never let me down so far :P .

I would say you are doing fairly well Reb so don't worry.

Kegstore was referring to insulin to carb ratios for peeps using bolus/basal. Reb is not using fast acting bolus insulin so insulin to carb ratios won't really help her. The only way she is able to control her bg levels is by using carbohydrate and eating every so many hours accordinging to what her bg meter reveals.

There's nothing wrong with your bg meter Reb so don't worry about that either.

A packet of Nic Nacs is about 20g of carb according to my Gems food dictionary. I fancy some  Do they still do Scampi & Lemon?
