Background retinopathy

I was diagnosed as Type 2 in December last year and have just been told I have Background retinopathy I’ve also been suffering with ocular migraines recently too, should I be worried or are the two not related

I dont know anything about migraines but background reinopathy is something that can dissapear with good blood sugar control. Ive spent over 20 years with screening test results shifting between totally clear and mild background reinopathy

I doubt if you have retinopathy from Type 2 diabetes after only a year.

I was told 5 weeks ago by the eye surgeon that the two are unconnected. Also, that my ocular or optical migraines are not connected to the usual 'head' type migraines. This condition is something new to me.

Background retinopathy and ocular migraines are probably not related. However, you should see your GP about the new onset of ocular migraines, if you haven't already. It's important to note whether the migraine affects one or both eyes.

I doubt if you have retinopathy from Type 2 diabetes after only a year.

As someone can have type 2 diabetes for several years before diagnosis, it is not very unusual for someone to have background retinopathy on first screening.

With the migraines, have you changed your diet, if so are you drinking enough water and getting enough salt?

I had retinopathy when diagnosed which led the consultant to say i must have been undiagnosed for at least 15-20 years giving an age of onset as late teens - bit of a bummer given that doctors had tested me for diabetes several times in childhood and categorically said I wasnt. Mind you when I was a kid they only did urine sample testing

I had the same.
Tested for diabetes when I was 16 and again when I was 22 due to my Dad mentioning my thirst all the time.
The doctors at the time thinking back were not really bothered.I'm now 46 with severe changes retinopathy and as the eye specialist mentioned I was undiagnosed for well well over a decade.
Have now gone from 101Hba to 33 in 9 months and now done even more damage due to dropping to quick,NOT my GP or D nurse warned me this could accelerate retinopathy,BUT with good control it is now settling down and can still disappear,be careful and speak to you specialist about the best way to move forward.

Thank you for all your replies, I have had the eye migraines before diagnosis but they seem to be getting more regular recently I will make an appointment with my GP but am relieved to hear that the two aren’t connected
