Bad effect of an infection - help!

My husband has been a diet-controlled diabetic for ten years. He is now in hospital with an acute infectious disease and is having to inject insulin as a result of soaring sugar levels caused by the infection.
Hope someone who has had something like this happen to them can advise? Did you ever get off the insulin again?
Any help gratefully received.

I would just say it may depend on what kind of infection it is.

Blood sugar levels can go high with viruses like flu or with throat/chest infections and in this case it is almost always a short term thing I think.

Infection does cause a rise in sugar levels. I've just had an average cold and long-haul travel and my BS shot up into the teens and stayed there regardless of food intake for a couple of weeks or so. It's now come back down again to single figures, so with a bit of luck your husband may be able to come off insulin?
